October 11, 2011 - Cain, Romney Top Pack In Virginia GOP Race, Quinnipiac University Poll Finds; Both Tie Obama As Perry Fades Word format Businessman Herman Cain ties former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney as the leading choice of Virginia Republicans for their presidential nomination with 21 percent each, followed by Texas Gov. Rick Perry with 11 percent, less than half his showing a month ago when he had led the pack, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today. President Barack Obama's job approval and re-election numbers remain seriously under water in Virginia, although he is in a statistical tie with Romney and Cain, while holding a narrow lead over Perry, in general election matchups, the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe- ack) University poll finds. In Virginia's U.S. Senate race, Tim Kaine and George Allen are too close to call, with 44 percent for the Republican Allen and 45 percent for the Democrat Kaine. There has not been more than a 1 percent difference between them in any of Quinnipiac University's three surveys so far this year. "Herman Cain is moving up the ladder at breakneck speed. His 21 percent share of the GOP primary vote is more than three times the 6 percent he received when Quinnipiac University surveyed Virginians September 15," said Peter A. Brown, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Polling institute. "The race among Virginia Republicans remains far, far from settled. Romney's support remains relatively stable while other candidates rise and fall around him. Perry led the GOP pack with 25 percent in September followed by Romney with 19 percent." Today, Texas U.S. Rep. Ron Paul gets 9 percent, with Minnesota U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich at 7 percent each, former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum at 2 percent and former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman at 1 percent. In 2012 general election matchups among all Virginia voters: President Obama gets 44 percent to Romney's 45 percent; Obama gets 45 percent to Cain's 43 percent; Obama leads Perry 47 - 42 percent. Obama and his GOP opponents do equally well among their own party members, but independent voters go to Romney 48 - 39 percent over Obama and back Cain 45 - 39 percent over the president. Obama gets 44 percent of independent voters to Perry's 43 percent. There is a gender gap in each race. Women back Obama: 47 - 41 percent over Romney; 48 - 37 percent over Cain: 49 - 37 percent over Perry. Virginia men go Republican against the president: 50 - 41 percent for Romney; 50 - 42 percent for Cain; 47 percent for Perry to 45 percent for Obama. "The good news for President Barack Obama in Virginia is that he isn't losing match-ups against any of the three leading Republican candidates," said Brown. "The bad news for him is that he is viewed unfavorably by 49 percent of Virginians and favorably by only 45 percent. Moreover, Virginia voters say 51 - 44 percent that Obama does not deserve re-election. "And Virginia voters disapprove 52 - 45 percent of how the president is doing his job." Cain and Romney, not nearly as well known as Obama, have positive favorability ratings: Romney at 38 - 29 percent and Cain at 30 - 15 percent, with 54 percent who don't know enough about him to form an opinion. But Perry has a 35 - 22 percent unfavorable rating. In the Senate race, Kaine and Allen also have similar favorability ratings: Allen, like Kaine a former governor, has a 45 - 28 percent favorable rating to Kaine's 47 - 29 percent. "This race is tight as a tick," said Brown. From October 3 - 9, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,459 registered voters with a margin of error of +/- 2.6 percentage points. Live interviewers call land lines and cell phones. The poll includes 345 Republicans surveyed October 5 - 9, after New Jersey Gov. Christopher Christie and former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin dropped out. The margin of error is +/- 5.3 percent. The Quinnipiac University Poll, directed by Douglas Schwartz, Ph.D., conducts public opinion surveys in Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Florida, Ohio, Virginia and the nation as a public service and for research.
