December 22, 2011 - Virginia Voters Divided On Uranium Mining, Quinnipiac University Poll Finds; Support For Campus Gun Ban Almost 4-1 Word format Virginia voters are split like an atom on the issue of uranium mining as 43 percent say mining should be allowed because of economic benefits while 41 percent are opposed because of environmental concerns, according to Quinnipiac University poll release today. Voters also say 48 - 42 percent that the state's projected $1 billion budget deficit should be eliminated only by spending cuts with no tax increases, the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN- uh-pe-ack) University poll finds. Voters back 63 - 25 percent the state's policy of using tax incentives to attract new business to Virginia. And they oppose 58 - 32 percent a legislative proposal that would define life as beginning at conception, the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University poll finds. Virginia voters say 50 - 45 percent that protecting gun rights is more important than controlling gun ownership, but they oppose 62 - 32 percent lifting the state's law limiting handgun purchases to one a month. Voters say 75 - 20 percent that guns should be banned on college campuses. Whether to lift the state's ban on mining uranium is expected to be a major fight in the legislative session which begins next month in Richmond. A June 29 Quinnipiac University poll showed voters divided 41 - 41 percent on the question, "There is a large gender gap on the issue of removing the uranium ban," said Peter Brown, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute. "Men want to lift it 53 - 33 percent while women want to keep the restriction 47 - 34 percent. Education also seems to affect attitude, with college graduates opposed to mining 47 - 40 percent, while those without a degree in favor of mining 45 - 37 percent." Support for uranium mining is 62 - 24 percent among Republicans while independent voters split 42 - 43 percent. Democrats oppose mining 54 - 29 percent. When it comes to the state's projected budget deficit, the split is along party lines. Republicans say cuts only 65 - 27 percent while Democrats want a mix of service cuts and tax hikes 51 - 39 percent, with independent voters close to the Democrats' position 49 - 41 percent. Virginians continue to say the existing cuts made by lawmakers have been fair to folks like them 52 - 36 percent, a key measurement of satisfaction with how the state is being run. Gov. Bob McDonnell gets a 53 - 29 percent thumbs up from voters on his handling of the state budget and a 57 - 21 percent overall job approval, compared to 62 - 22 percent approval in Quinnipiac University's October 12 survey. Also getting thumbs up on job approval from the voters are: U.S. Sen. Mark Warner, 62 - 23 percent; U.S. Sen. Jim Webb, 48 - 29 percent; Lt. Gov. Bill Bolling, 35 - 18 percent, with 46 percent undecided; State Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli, 47 - 27 percent; The State Legislature, 46 - 36 percent. "Virginia retains its unusual status as a state where all the statewide elected officials, and the State Legislature, are popular with voters. Of the seven states where Quinnipiac University conducts surveys, Virginia seems to have the greatest contentment with its politicians, both Republican and Democratic," said Brown. The bill defining life as beginning at conception is similar to a constitutional amendment voted down last month by Mississippi voters. It gets strong opposition from Democrats, 74 - 16 percent and independent voters, 59 - 31 percent, while Republicans back it 51 - 40 percent. About half of Virginia voters, 49 percent, say someone in their household owns a gun. But there is support among all parties, income, age and education groups to keep guns off college campuses. Women want guns off campus 85 - 11 percent and men back a campus ban 63 - 31 percent. Even people with carry permits should not be allowed to bring guns on campus, voters say 65 - 32 percent. From December 13 - 19, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,135 registered voters with a margin of error of +/- 2.9 percentage points. Live interviewers call land lines and cell phones. The Quinnipiac University Poll, directed by Douglas Schwartz, Ph.D., conducts public opinion surveys in Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Florida, Ohio, Virginia and the nation as a public service and for research.
