February 8, 2012 - Obama Inches Past Romney In Virginia Presidential Race, Quinnipiac University Poll Finds; Senate Race Still Tied Word format For the first time in this election cycle, President Barack Obama inches ahead of former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, the leading Republican candidate, 47 - 43 percent in Virginia, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today. Romney has a commanding lead among likely Republican primary voters in the state's no-Newt Gingrich presidential primary. Today's results contrast to results of a December 21 survey by the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University, showing Romney with 44 percent and President Obama with 42 percent. Virginia voters still give the president a slightly negative 46 - 49 percent job approval rating. They split 46 - 48 percent on whether Obama deserves a second term in the Oval Office, but that represents a serious improvement from December when voters said 53 - 41 percent he did not deserve four more years. In the state's hotly contested U.S. Senate race Democrat Tim Kaine has 45 percent to Republican George Allen's 44 percent. In the Obama-Romney matchup, independent voters favor the president 45 - 41 percent, compared to a 41 - 41 percent tie in December. A gender gap is opening up as women shift to the president, backing him 52 - 40 percent, compared to a 43 - 45 percent split in December. Men back Romney 47 - 43 percent, compared to 43 - 42 percent in December. "For the first time since Quinnipiac University began polling Virginia voters on the race, President Barack Obama holds a razor-thin lead over Gov. Mitt Romney," said Peter A. Brown, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute. "The keys are the president's improved standing among independent voters and women in the Old Dominion." "The Obama bump could be driven by the perception that the economy is improving. And, the nasty GOP primary fight is not helping Romney, exposing swing voters to lots of negative attacks on him from within his own party," Brown added. The president also leads former House Speaker Newt Gingrich 51 - 37 percent, as he tops former Pennsylvania U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum 49 - 41 percent and Texas U.S. Rep. Ron Paul 47 - 40 percent. In the GOP primary, Romney is the heavy favorite to win Virginia's delegates. That's because Santorum and Gingrich failed to qualify for the ballot. Romney leads Ron Paul among GOP likely primary voters 68 - 19 percent. "Leading up to Super Tuesday, when the GOP candidates will be fighting over almost a dozen states, Virginia voters likely will be spared the negative television commercials and direct mail attacks since the outcome of its primary is pretty much pre-ordained," said Brown. The Senate race has been tight as a tick all year, with neither man ahead by more than two points among all voters. In this survey, Kaine leads 44 - 40 percent among independent voters. "Kaine's standing in the Senate race will almost certainly be tied to Virginia's view of the president. Politics is a team game and when the captain of the blue team improves his standing, the rest of the team also benefits," said Brown. From February 1 - 6, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,544 registered voters with a margin of error of +/- 2.5 percentage points. Live interviewers call land lines and cell phones. The Republican primary includes 546 likely voters with a margin of error of +/- 4.2 percent. The Quinnipiac University Poll, directed by Douglas Schwartz, Ph.D., conducts public opinion surveys in Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Florida, Ohio, Virginia and the nation as a public service and for research.
