February 9, 2012 - Virginia Voters Say Repeal HPV Shots For Girls, Quinnipiac University Poll Finds; More Than 3-1 Support Drug Tests For Welfare Recipients Word format Virginia voters say 50 - 42 percent, including 54 - 40 percent among women, repeal the law requiring girls to be vaccinated against the HPV virus before entering sixth grade, according to a Quinnipiac University poll release today. Men are divided as 46 percent say repeal the law and 44 percent say keep it, the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University poll finds. Welfare recipients should be required to pass a drug test, Virginia voters say by an overwhelming 76 - 21 percent. Support for drug tests is 77 - 20 percent among white voters and 68 - 26 percent among black voters, 79 - 17 percent among women and 72 - 25 percent among men. There is strong support among all party, income, religious and age groups. Virginia voters say 49 - 41 percent that it's a good idea to make it easier to fire public school teachers. Voters back 57 - 35 percent legislation that would allow public schools to open before Labor Day. Meanwhile Gov. Bob McDonnell remains among the most popular chief state executives in any state surveyed by Quinnipiac University, with a 58 - 24 percent job approval rating. "For many politicians - especially his gubernatorial colleagues around the country - no change in their popularity would be a bad thing, but for Gov. Bob McDonnell the status quo is pretty good," said Peter A. Brown, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute. "He has a 44 - 36 percent positive rating among black voters and a negative net score among Democrats of just 13 - while most governors have a net negative three times that among their opposition party voters." McDonnell gets an 83 - 7 percent job approval from Republicans and 59 - 19 percent from independent voters, while Democrats give him a negative 34 - 47 percent. On the legislative agenda, support for repeal of the HPV vaccination requirement is 59 - 33 percent among Republicans and 49 - 44 percent among independent voters, while Democrats support the vaccination rule 54 - 40 percent. "On most issues, women are more in sync with Democrats, but on the HPV vaccine question they are more in tune with the view of Republicans," said Brown. "With 57 percent in support of drug testing for welfare recipients, Democrats also find themselves slightly out of sync with women and black voters, who support the idea by larger margins." On the issue of making it easier to fire teachers there is a strong partisan and gender divide. Republicans support the idea 64 - 26 percent while Democrats oppose it 61 - 30 percent. Independent voters like the idea 55 - 36 percent. There is a substantial gender gap as men like the idea 56 - 34 percent, while women oppose it 47 - 43 percent. The school opening proposal inspires little partisan difference: all three groups back it by similar margins. But gender is a slightly different story: men like it 61 - 31 percent, while women are a bit cooler, backing it 54 - 38 percent. Voters also back 48 - 40 percent lifting the current prohibition on Sunday hunting on private land. The issue shows substantial partisan split as Republicans back Sunday hunting 53 - 39 percent, as do independent voters 50 - 38 percent. Democrats disagree 48 - 37 percent. Men like the idea 53 - 34 percent, while women disagree 46 - 43 percent. Virginia's other statewide elected officials all have positive job approval ratings: 64 - 22 percent for U.S Sen. Mark Warner; 52 - 26 percent for U.S. Sen. Jim Webb; 38 - 19 percent for Lt. Gov. Bill Bolling; 46 - 31 percent for Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli. From February 1 - 6, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,544 registered voters with a margin of error of +/- 2.5 percentage points. Live interviewers call land lines and cell phones. The Quinnipiac University Poll, directed by Douglas Schwartz, Ph.D., conducts public opinion surveys in Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Florida, Ohio, Virginia and the nation as a public service and for research.
