Kevin R. Convey named chair of the Department of Journalism
March 25, 2014 - Newspaper veteran Kevin R. Convey, a former editor-in-chief at the New York Daily News, has been named chair of the Department of Journalism.
Convey, of Brockton, Mass. and New York City, brings a wealth of experience to the post. He was a journalist for three decades, working his way up from reporter to editor-in-chief at the Boston Herald and then serving as editor-in-chief of the Daily News in New York.
"Kevin has an outstanding record of achievement as a journalist," said Lee Kamlet, dean of the School of Communications. "His deep experience has given him a very clear idea of where journalism and journalism education ought to be going. I do not think you can be a first-rate school of communication if you don't have a first-rate journalism department. It is the backbone of the school. I think he is the right person to lead the department."
Convey, who will also assume the position of assistant professor, said he was "thrilled" by his appointment.
"I'm grateful for the opportunity to work with Quinnipiac's talented students, accomplished faculty and forward-thinking administration," he said. "Together, I hope we can make Quinnipiac's journalism department among the best in the country, and our students among the best prepared to do the crucial work of journalism."
After Convey's stint at the Daily News ended in January 2012, he earned a master's degree in entrepreneurial journalism from the Graduate School of Journalism at the City University of New York. At the same time, he taught graduates and undergraduates at New York University and The City College of New York as an adjunct professor of journalism. He is currently an adjunct professor at both schools.
Convey graduated magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa from Colby College in 1977 with a bachelor's degree in classics-English.
