St Baldrick's
Quinnipiac student Kevin Carroll volunteered to have his head shaved March 6 during the University's third annual St. Baldrick's Day.

Members of the university community participated in St. Baldrick's Day festivities on March 6 on Burt Kahn Court to raise money and awareness to fight childhood cancer.

By the end of the evening, more than $38,000 was raised -- with two weeks of fundraising to go.

At the event, 130 men shaved their heads and 40 women cut their hair for the cause to demonstrate their support of children with cancer. More than 400 students attended the event, now in its third year at Quinnipiac.

All proceeds from St. Baldrick's Day benefit the St. Baldrick's Foundation, a volunteer-driven charity that funds more in childhood cancer research grants than any organization except the U.S. government.

"This charity is important to support because it could possibly be the simplest act to show someone's heroism. There are not many ways a college student can become a hero to a young child, but by participating in this event they are," said Kristin Cagney '13, a member of Quinnipiac's Student Programming Board (SPB) who helped organize the event.

"Over the past three years, nearly 300 students have become walking billboards for the cause--just by cutting their hair or shaving their head. SPB and QU Irish Club host this event to make a difference for a cause that affects several of our peers," Cagney said.

Donations will be collected until March 20.
