February 6, 2014 - Despite Christie Woes, Clinton Struggles In Colorado, Quinnipiac University Poll Finds; Udall Locked In Tight Race For Reelection
PDF format

The George Washington Bridge traffic scandal stalls New Jersey Gov. Christopher Christie's 2016 presidential bid in Colorado, but other Republican contenders give former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton a run for her money, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today.

Secretary Clinton gets 43 percent today, with Gov. Christie at 42 percent. This compares to a 46 - 38 percent Christie lead in a November 20 survey by the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University.

Christie's plunge does not help Clinton who is struggling against other Republicans:
  • U.S. Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky gets 47 percent to Clinton's 43 percent;
  • Clinton is at 44 percent with 43 percent for U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas;
  • U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin leads her 48 - 43 percent.
Ryan would make a good president, Colorado voters say 44 - 38 percent, while Clinton, Vice President Joseph Biden and other Republican contenders all get mixed or negative grades on that question.

"Coloradans love affair with New Jersey Gov. Christopher Christie takes an icy February turn while former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton seems frozen in place, in the run-up to the 2016 presidential race," said Tim Malloy, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute.

With large gender gaps, Colorado voters approve 45 - 41 percent of the job Sen. Mark Udall is doing, but are divided 42 - 42 percent on whether he deserves reelection this year. Women approve 51 - 32 percent and say 48 - 31 percent he deserves reelection. Men disapprove 49 - 40 percent and say 52 - 36 percent he does not deserve reelection.

Looking at the 2014 U.S. Senate race in Colorado, Sen. Udall gets 45 percent to 42 percent for Republican District Attorney Ken Buck. In other possible matchups:
  • Udall gets 43 percent to 41 percent for State Sen. Randy Baumgardner;
  • Udall edges State Sen. Owen Hill 44 - 39 percent;
  • Udall has 43 percent to State Rep. Amy Stephens with 41 percent;
  • Udall tops businessman Jaime McMillan 45 - 38 percent.
"Democratic incumbent U.S. Sen. Mark Udall may be the front-runner, but he can hear the footsteps of three challengers, all within a few percentage points of him," Malloy said. President Obama Approval, Minimum Wage, Immigration

Colorado voters disapprove 59 - 37 percent of the job President Barack Obama is doing, close to his worst approval rating in any Quinnipiac University state or national poll since he was elected. Men disapprove 67 - 32 percent while women disapprove 51 - 44 percent

Colorado voters support 67 - 31 percent raising the national minimum wage. The only negative is from Republicans who are opposed 52 - 44 percent. Offered several options:
  • 33 percent say increase the minimum wage to $10.10 per hour;
  • 14 percent say increase it beyond the current $7.25 to something less than $10.10;
  • 18 percent say increase it to more than $10.10;
  • 31 percent say don't increase the minimum wage.
Raising the minimum wage will lead businesses to cut jobs, voters say 52 - 43 percent.

Illegal immigrants should be allowed to stay in the U.S. and apply for citizenship, 59 percent of Colorado voters say. Another 11 percent say illegal immigrants should be allowed to stay, but not apply for citizenship, while 26 percent say they should be forced to leave the U.S.

In favor of allowing immigrants to stay and apply for citizenship are 45 percent of Republicans, 81 percent of Democrats and 53 percent of independent voters, 53 percent of men and 64 percent of women.

Colorado voters oppose the 2010 Affordable Care Act 60 - 37 percent.

From January 29 - February 2, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,139 registered voters with a margin of error of +/- 2.9 percentage points. Live interviewers call land lines and cell phones.

The Quinnipiac University Poll, directed by Douglas Schwartz, Ph.D., conducts public opinion surveys in Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Florida, Ohio, Virginia, Iowa, Colorado and the nation as a public service and for research.
