May 14, 2007 - Despite Bad Start, Yankees Rule In Connecticut, Quinnipiac University Poll Finds

Word format

Despite a rocky start, including a visit to the basement of the American League East, the New York Yankees still rule in Connecticut, where fans prefer them to the Boston Red Sox 43 - 37 percent, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today. Another 10 percent say they are New York Mets fans.

The Bronx Bombers beat the Bosox 42 - 35 percent, with 12 percent for the Mets, in a May 4, 2006 poll by the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University.

The Yankees are ahead 53 - 11 percent in Fairfield County, with 24 percent for the Mets, while the Red Sox lead 52 - 36 percent in Hartford County and 65 - 27 percent in Tolland, Windham and New London counties, the poll finds.

Team loyalty was asked of the 56 percent of Connecticut residents who say they are "very interested" or "somewhat interested" in baseball.

"The Red Sox may be first in the division but they are second in the hearts of Connecticut fans. These Yankees supporters show they are not fair-weather friends as they stick with the Bombers through tough times," said Quinnipiac University Poll Director Douglas Schwartz, Ph.D. "Now, if The Rocket can just deliver."

From May 2 - 7, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,653 Connecticut adults with a margin of error of +/- 2.4 percentage points.

The Quinnipiac University Poll conducts public opinion surveys in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Florida, Ohio and the nation as a public service and for research. For more data -- http://www.quinnipiac.edu/x271.xml, or call (203) 582-5201.
