March 11, 2014 - World Series Win Don't Mean Beans, As Yanks Top Red Sox In Quinnipiac University's 12th Annual Connecticut Baseball Playoff
PDF format

Despite their World Series win, the Boston Red Sox still trail the New York Yankees 43 - 38 percent in Quinnipiac University's 12th Annual Connecticut Baseball Poll. Only 8 percent of fans cheer for the New York Mets.

This compares to the 42 - 37 percent Yankees lead in the June 20, 2013, survey by the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University.

In today's survey, a total of 52 percent of Connecticut adults say they are "very interested" or "somewhat interested" in Major League Baseball. Women fans are divided, with 44 percent for the Red Sox and 42 percent for the Yankees, compared to last year when women went for pinstripes 48 - 35 percent. Men back the Bombers 44 - 34 percent, compared to last year when they split with 40 percent for the Sox and 37 percent for the Yankees.

New York neighbors in Fairfield County go to the Yankees 57 - 15 percent, while Hartford County goes to the Sox 51 - 36 percent. Boston is up 61 - 26 percent in Tolland, Windham and New London Counties.

"Boston's World Series victory doesn't mean beans in Connecticut, where more fans back the New York Yankees - the favorites for four years now," said Douglas Schwartz, PhD, director of the Quinnipiac University poll. "Men and women have shifted, but the overall result is little changed. The Yankees huge margin in Fairfield County gives them a statewide edge."

From February 26 - March 2, Quinnipiac University surveyed 2,146 Connecticut adults with a margin of error of +/- 2.1 percentage points. Live interviewers call landlines and cell phones.

The Quinnipiac University Poll conducts public opinion surveys in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Florida, Ohio, Virginia, Iowa, Colorado and the nation as a public service and for research.
