January 7, 2004 - Rowland Should Resign, Connecticut Voters Tell Quinnipiac University Poll; Voters Say 6 - 1 Governor Misled Them
Gov. John Rowland should resign, Connecticut voters say 56 - 34 percent in a Quinnipiac University poll released today. Ten percent are undecided.

This compares to a 44 - 45 percent voter split on the resignation question in a December 17 poll by the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University.

Forty-two percent of Connecticut voters say the state legislature should impeach and remove Gov. Rowland, with 46 percent opposed to impeachment.

Rowland has a negative 28 - 62 percent approval rating, similar to December 17. Only 13 percent of voters say he is honest and trustworthy, down from 18 percent.

A total of 99 percent of Connecticut voters have heard or read about the controversy involving renovations to Rowland's Bantam Lake cottage, including 49 percent who have read or heard "a lot" about the issue.

Rowland "deliberately misled the public" on this controversy, 82 percent of voters say. And 88 percent say they are "very concerned" or "somewhat concerned" that Rowland provided incorrect information.

"Public sentiment for Gov. Rowland's resignation has grown significantly in three weeks, from an even split to a clear majority who say he should step down. As people learn more about the controversy, the tide of public opinion is turning against Rowland," said Quinnipiac University Poll Director Douglas Schwartz, Ph.D.

Only 20 percent of Connecticut voters have a favorable opinion of Lt. Gov. Jodi Rell, while 70 percent say they don't know enough about her to form an opinion. Voters say 48 - 9 percent that she is qualified to take over as Governor, but 42 percent are undecided.

"Even though Lt. Gov. Jodi Rell has been in office for 9 years, voters don't know much about her," Dr. Schwartz said.

From January 4 - 6, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,006 Connecticut registered voters with a margin of error of +/- 3.1 percent.

The Quinnipiac University Poll conducts public opinion surveys in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Pennsylvania and the nation as a public service and for research.
