July 31, 2002 - Democrat Gains On Connecticut Gov. Rowland, Quinnipiac University Poll Finds; Incumbent Slips As Good Times Fade
Connecticut Gov. John Rowland's 2 - 1 lead over his Democratic challenger has slipped, and he now holds a 51 - 34 lead over former State Comptroller Bill Curry, according to a Quinnipiac University Poll released today.

In a May 23 poll by the independent Quinnipiac University, before State Senate Majority Leader George Jepsen, dropped out of the Governor's race to become Curry's running mate, Rowland topped Curry 55 - 27 percent.

Voters approve 54 - 32 percent of the job Rowland is doing, compared to 63 - 24 percent in May. This is Rowland's lowest approval rating since March, 1996.

Things in Connecticut have gotten better since Rowland became Governor, 35 percent of voters say, while 21 percent say they've gotten worse and 39 percent say they've stayed the same.

"The good news for Bill Curry is that he cuts into Rowland's lead. The bad news is that he still has a recognition problem," said Quinnipiac University Poll Director Douglas Schwartz, Ph.D.

"The good news for Gov. Rowland is that he has a 17 point lead over Curry. The bad news is that his job approval rating continues to drop."

"Democrats are beginning to unite behind Curry, as his support among Democrats has gone from 52 percent to 61 percent," Schwartz added.

"An incumbent's approval rating often rises or falls with the Dow and the stock market news may be a factor in Rowland's falling approval numbers."

Public satisfaction with "the way things are going in Connecticut today" is down from 71 percent in May to 65 percent today.

President Bush's approval rating also has dropped from 70 percent to 59 percent.

Rowland's favorability is 45 - 21 percent among registered voters, with 27 percent mixed and 7 percent saying they haven't heard enough to form an opinion.

Curry has a 13 - 10 percent favorability rating, with 16 percent mixed and 60 percent who say they haven't heard enough to form an opinion.

Looking at Rowland's characteristics, Connecticut voters say:
  • 71 - 20 percent that he can get things done;
  • 73 - 19 percent that he has a likable personality;
  • 58 - 31 percent that he is honest and trustworthy;
  • 51 - 42 percent that he cares about the needs and problems of people like them;
  • 67 - 17 percent that he works well with other political leaders;
  • 44 - 44 percent that he shares their views on important issues;
  • 68 - 21 percent that he would be a strong leader in a crisis.
Many voters were undecided in assessing Curry's characteristics, showing:
  • 32 - 14 percent that he can get things done;
  • 42 - 12 percent that he has a likable personality;
  • 37 - 11 percent that he is honest and trustworthy;
  • 39 - 14 percent that he cares about the needs and problems of people like them;
  • 32 - 11 percent that he works well with other political leaders;
  • 31 - 20 percent that he shares their views on important issues;
  • 24 - 19 percent that he would be a strong leader in a crisis.
From July 23 - 30, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,092 Connecticut registered voters, with a margin of error of +/- 3 percent.
