December 20, 2001 - Most Not Worried About Anthrax In Mail, Connecticut Voters Tell Quinnipiac University Poll; Most Say Family Finances Are Good
A total of 72 percent of Connecticut voters are "not too worried" or "not worried at all" that someone in their family will be exposed to anthrax through the mail, while 6 percent are "very worried" and 21 percent are "somewhat worried," according to a Quinnipiac University Poll released today.

By a 91 - 7 percent margin, Connecticut voters say the mail they receive at home is safe, but 53 percent of women and 41 percent of men - 47 percent overall - say they are being more cautious in handling their mail.

A total of 67 percent of voters say the U.S. economy is "not so good" or "poor," while 31 percent say it is "good" and 1 percent say it is "excellent." But 51 percent expect the U.S. economy to get better in the next year, while 15 percent say it will get worse and 32 percent say it will stay the same.

"A few weeks after the anthrax death in Oxford, Connecticut residents are not panicking about anthrax. The vast majority believe the mail is safe," said Quinnipiac University Poll Director Douglas Schwartz, Ph.D.

"While there has been a big change in people's perceptions of the national economy since Quinnipiac University's last poll in April, there hasn't been much change in people's views of their own personal finances.

"In April, 61 percent of Connecticut voters rated the national economy positively. That number has dropped to 32 percent. Also in April, 73 percent described their own personal finances positively, compared to 76 percent today," Dr. Schwartz said.

Eleven percent of Connecticut voters describe their personal finances as "excellent," while 65 percent describe them as "good;" 18 percent say "not so good," and 5 percent say "poor." Their personal finances will get better in the next year, 33 percent of voters say, while 7 percent say they will get worse and 58 percent say they will stay about the same.

But 18 percent of Connecticut voters are "very concerned" and 20 percent are "somewhat concerned" that someone in their family will lose their job in the next year, while 28 percent are "not too concerned" and 34 percent are "not concerned at all."

Ten percent of voters say they will spend more on holiday gifts this year than last, while 32 percent say they will spend less and 57 percent say they will spend about the same.

From December 10 - 17, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,194 Connecticut registered voters, with a margin of error of +/- 2.8 percent.
