January 13, 2005 - Connecticut Gov. Rell Climbs To New High, Quinnipiac University Poll Finds; Rowland Should Do Jail Time, Voters Say
Connecticut Gov. Jodi Rell has an 83 - 3 percent approval rating, the highest ever recorded for a state official in a Quinnipiac poll. Only President George W. Bush received higher ratings in post-9/11 Quinnipiac polls.

President Bush has a negative 43 - 52 percent approval among Connecticut voters today.

Gov. Rell's latest score tops her 80 - 4 percent approval rating in a November 23, 2004, poll by the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University.

Approval among Democrats, Republicans, men and women is 80 percent or higher.

The fact that Rell delivered her state of the state address nine days after breast cancer surgery makes 48 percent of voters, including 42 percent of men and 53 percent of women, think more favorably of her.

"Connecticut Gov. Jodi Rell is having a love affair with the voters, who give her sky-high ratings on every measure. Just one year ago, 70 percent of these voters did not know enough about then-Lt. Gov. Rell to form an opinion," said Quinnipiac University Poll Director Douglas Schwartz, Ph.D.

"Whatever she's got, she should bottle it and sell it to political leaders around the nation. She probably could balance the state budget with the proceeds."

Connecticut voters give their Governor high scores on every measure:
  • 79 - 7 percent that she has strong leadership qualities;
  • 82 - 3 percent that she is honest and trustworthy;
  • 72 - 9 percent that she cares about their needs and problems;
  • 84 - 3 percent that she has a likable personality;
  • 60 - 15 percent that she shares their views on issues voters care about;
  • 74 - 10 percent that she will clean up state government.

                                 John Rowland

Former Gov. John Rowland should serve time in prison, 71 percent of voters say, with 22 percent who say resigning as governor is punishment enough. The 15 - 21 month prison sentence called for in federal guidelines is long enough, 38 percent of voters say, as 30 percent say Rowland should serve a longer sentence.

Connecticut voters support 78 - 18 percent raising the income tax for residents who earn more than $1 million.

Voters also support 59 - 29 percent Rell's proposal to spend $10 - $20 million in state funds for stem cell research.

Approval ratings are high for Connecticut's U.S. Senators as well: 73 - 15 percent for Sen. Joseph Lieberman, and 64 - 19 percent for Sen. Christopher Dodd.

From January 7 - 10, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,287 Connecticut registered voters with a margin of error of +/- 2.7 percentage points.

The Quinnipiac University Poll conducts public opinion surveys in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Florida and the nation as a public service and for research.
