October 21, 1998 - Connecticut Voters Say 13-1 Life Is Better With Rowland, Quinnipiac College Poll Finds; High Satisfaction Puts Challenger At Big Loss
By a 65 - 5 percent margin, Connecticut's registered voters say things have gotten better in the state since John Rowland became Governor, while 27 percent say things stayed the same, according to a Quinnipiac College Poll released today.

Among likely voters, the Republican incumbent Governor leads Rep. Barbara Kennelly, his Democratic challenger, 72 - 24 percent.

The Republican incumbent's approval rating remains at very high 76 - 17 percent levels, identical to the findings in an October 1 poll by the independent Quinnipiac College.

In another measure of the incumbent's success, 83 percent of registered voters are "very satisfied" or "somewhat satisfied" with life in Connecticut, while 17 percent are "somewhat dissatisfied" or "very dissatisfied."

"Gov. Rowland maintains his huge lead over Rep. Barbara Kennelly. He beats the Democratic challenger among both men and women, among all age groups and has the support of 37 percent of Democratic likely voters," said Quinnipiac College Poll Director Douglas Schwartz. "With two weeks until the election, the gap could close a bit if some Democrats come back to their party's candidate.

"Right now, Connecticut voters are satisfied with life in the state and are not inclined to select a new Governor."

By a 61 - 13 percent margin, voters have a favorable opinion of Rowland, with 20 percent mixed and 5 percent saying they do not know enough to form an opinion. This is a new high for Rowland.

Kennelly's favorability is split 21 - 24 percent, with 24 percent mixed and 30 percent saying they do not know enough to form an opinion.

"On health care, an issue the challenger has stressed in her campaign, voters are tied at 42 - 39 percent on who would do a better job. On all the other issues we measured, Gov. Rowland is preferred over Rep. Kennelly," Schwartz said.

Voters expect Rowland to do a better job than Kennelly handling:
  • Taxes, 65 - 21 percent;
  • Education, 51 - 34 percent;
  • Crime, 65 -14 percent;
  • Welfare and the poor, 50 - 36 percent;
  • The economy and jobs, 70 - 17 percent;
  • The environment, 42 - 36 percent.
"The voters have seen Kennelly in the media, but her message isn't getting through. She still suffers from a low level of familiarity. And those who are familiar with Kennelly have a mixed opinion of her. She has the difficult job of convincing satisfied voters there is a reason to dump a popular incumbent, or even listen as she makes her case," Schwartz said.

Eighty-one percent of Connecticut voters say they have seen Kennelly on TV news and 85 percent say they have read something about her in a newspaper, compared with 93 percent who have seen Rowland on TV and 93 percent who have read about him in the newspapers.

Only 24 percent of voters have seen a televised debate between the candidates, and 73 percent of registered voters say all the major TV networks should broadcast a debate.

From October 13 - 19, Quinnipiac College surveyed 1,247 Connecticut registered voters, including 683 likely voters. The poll has a margin of error of +/- 2.8 percent for registered voters and +/- 3.8 percent for likely voters. The Quinnipiac College Poll conducts public opinion surveys in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut as a public service and for research.
