December 8, 1998 - Connecticut Residents Back Stadium Plan 51-39 Percent, Quinnipiac College Poll Finds; Most Are Concerned About Costs
By a 51 - 39 percent margin, Connecticut residents support Gov. John Rowland's plan to build a new stadium for the New England Patriots in Hartford, according to a Quinnipiac College Poll released today; 28 percent strongly favor the plan, while 23 percent favor it somewhat, 16 percent oppose it somewhat and 23 percent oppose it strongly.

Women support the plan 48 - 39 percent, while men support it 55 - 37 percent, the independent Quinnipiac College Poll finds.

There is a noticeable difference among age groups:
  • 18 to 29-year-olds support the plan 56 - 36 percent;
  • 30 to 44-year-olds support the plan 58 - 31 percent;
  • 45 to 64 year-olds are split 47 - 44 percent;
  • 65 and older are split 42 - 45 percent.
By a 49 - 31 percent margin, Connecticut residents say Gov. Rowland's plan is too generous to the Patriots, with 20 percent undecided. Only 33 percent of residents under 30 say the plan it too generous, while 58 percent of those over 65 say it's too generous.

"The good news for Gov. Rowland and stadium supporters is that most Connecticut residents favor the plan for the state to pay for a stadium for the Patriots in Hartford. People believe the stadium will benefit Hartford's image and economy," said Quinnipiac College Poll Director Douglas Schwartz. "The bad news is that the public thinks the deal is too generous to the Patriots and most residents doubt that the stadium will pay for itself."

Asked to name their favorite professional football team, 17 percent of Connecticut residents pick the New York Giants, while 17 percent pick the Patriots; 7 percent pick the Dallas Cowboys and 5 percent like the New York Jets.

While 44 percent are very confident or somewhat confident that the financing plan outlined by Gov. Rowland will cover the cost of the stadium, 55 percent are not very confident or not confident at all.

A total of 58 percent of residents say it is very important or somewhat important for Connecticut to have a professional football team, while 41 percent say it is not very important or not important at all.

The Patriots will improve Hartford's image a lot, say 38 percent of Connecticut residents, while 32 percent say it will improve some, 17 percent say it will improve a little and 10 percent say there will be no improvement.

Hartford's economy will improve a lot if the Patriots come, 33 percent say, while 38 percent say it will improve some, 20 percent say it will improve a little and 6 percent say there will be no improvement in the economy.

While 45 percent of Connecticut residents say they are professional football fans, 26 percent say they have been to a Patriots' game.

Eleven percent of residents say they are very likely to buy Patriots season tickets, while 12 percent say they are somewhat likely, 17 percent say they are not very likely and 60 percent say they are not likely at all.

A total of 54 percent of residents say they are very likely or somewhat likely to attend one home game if the Patriots move to Hartford. That number drops to 46 percent when the same question includes the estimate of $50 for a ticket.

From December 3 -7, Quinnipiac College surveyed 988 Connecticut residents. The poll has a margin of error of +/- 3.1 percent. The Quinnipiac College Poll conducts public opinion surveys in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut as a public service and for research.
