August 15, 2007 - Clinton Edges Ahead Of Giuliani For First Time, Quinnipiac University National Poll Finds; But She Still Has Biggest Negatives Of Any Candidate

Word format

New York Sen. Hillary Clinton has eked out a 46 - 43 percent lead over her chief Republican rival in the 2008 presidential race, former New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani, and has improved her favorability among American voters, according to a Quinnipiac University national poll released today.

This compares to a 45 - 44 percent Clinton lead in a June 13 poll by the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University, and a 49 - 40 percent Giuliani lead May 3. In other head-to-head matchups in the current survey:
  • Clinton leads Arizona Sen. John McCain 47 - 41 percent;
  • Clinton tops former Tennessee Sen. Fred Thompson 49 - 38 percent;
  • Illinois Sen. Barack Obama ties Giuliani 42 - 42 percent;
  • Obama beats McCain 43 - 39 percent, and tops Thompson 46 - 35 percent;
  • Former North Carolina Sen. John Edwards gets 43 percent to Giuliani's 42 percent;
  • Edwards tops McCain 45 - 37 percent and Thompson 49 - 32 percent.
"The movement is glacial, but for Sen. Hillary Clinton it's in the right direction. She holds her double-digit lead among Democrats and edges up a smidgen against Mayor Rudolph Giuliani," said Maurice Carroll, Director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute.

"But the 'Hillary hostility' factor is constant and feeds doubts about whether she can win in November 2008. That polling perennial - her unfavorability factor - remains high."

By a 48 - 43 percent margin, American voters have a favorable opinion of Clinton, her best score yet. But that 43 percent unfavorable is the highest of any of the top presidential contenders.

Favorability ratings for other contenders are:
  • 49 - 28 percent for Giuliani;
  • 47 - 41 percent for Gore;
  • 42 - 28 percent for McCain;
  • 48 - 22 percent for Obama;
  • 47 - 26 percent for Edwards;
  • For Thompson, 54 percent haven't heard enough to form an opinion;
  • For former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, 55 percent haven't heard enough.
Obama is the most likable candidate, 23 percent of American voters say, followed by 16 percent who list Clinton, and 12 percent each for Giuliani and Edwards.

Giuliani leads a Republican primary with 28 percent, unchanged from June 13 and May 3. Romney gets 15 percent, his best number ever, followed by 12 percent for Thompson, 11 percent for McCain and 7 percent for former House Speaker Newt Gingrich.

Clinton leads among Democrats with 36 percent, followed by Obama with 21 percent, Gore with 15 percent and Edwards with 9 percent. Among union households, Clinton leads Obama 38 - 20 percent.

In a special look at Sen. Clinton, 38 percent of American voters like her and like where she stands on the issues; 14 percent like her, but don't like her positions; 9 percent don't like her, but like where she stands on issues, and 33 percent don't like her or her positions.

Some 30 percent of voters like her a lot, while 27 percent like her a little. Another 14 percent dislike her a little, while 22 percent dislike her a lot and 2 percent hate her.

"We took a more intensive look at Clinton this time and found that people who like her tend to like her a lot. People who dislike her tend to dislike her a lot. And there are lots of both kinds," Carroll said. President Bush's Approval

American voters disapprove 64 - 29 percent of the job President George W. Bush is doing, one of his lowest scores ever in a Quinnipiac University national poll.

From August 7 - 13, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,545 American voters with a margin of error of +/- 2.5 percent, including 611 Republicans with a margin of error of +/- 4.0 percent, and 717 Democrats with a margin of error of +/- 3.7 percent.

The Quinnipiac University Poll, directed by Douglas Schwartz, Ph.D., conducts public opinion surveys in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Florida, Ohio and nationwide as a public service and for research. For more data -- http://www.quinnipiac.edu/x271.xml, or call (203) 582-5201.
