In the wake of "Bridgegate," the George Washington Bridge traffic scandal, several measures of New Jersey Gov. Christopher Christie's 2016 presidential prospects are down, as he trails former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton 46 - 38 percent, according to a Quinnipiac University national poll released today.

This compares to the results of a December 11 survey by the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University showing Gov. Christie at 42 percent and Secretary Clinton at 41 percent. The December results were almost identical to those of a November 13 survey.

The biggest shift since December is among independent voters who go from 47 - 32 percent for Christie last month to 41 percent for Clinton and 40 percent for Christie today.

American voters are divided 35 - 36 percent on whether Christie would make a good president, down from 49 - 31 percent November 13. Clinton would make a good president, voters say 52 - 40 percent, compared to 54 - 40 percent in November.

"New Jersey Gov. Christopher Christie's 2016 presidential drive is stuck in traffic, sideswiped by Bridgegate, the George Washington Bridge traffic scandal," said Tim Malloy, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute.

"In the last few months, Quinnipiac University national and state polls showed him inching ahead of former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. Today, she zips past him. But the Iowa Caucuses and the New Hampshire Primary are still two years down the road."

Among American voters, 73 percent have read or heard something about Bridgegate. Of that group, 50 percent say the scandal damages Christie's 2016 White House hopes, while 3 percent say it ends his chances; 2 percent say it helps his chances and 39 percent say the scandal has no impact.

The controversy makes 34 percent less likely to vote for Christie, with 4 percent more likely and 56 percent saying it makes no difference.

Christie still runs better against Clinton than other leading Republicans. Clinton tops possible GOP contenders:
  • 49 - 39 percent over U.S. Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky;
  • 50 - 35 percent over U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas;
  • 49 - 38 percent over former Gov. Jeb Bush of Florida;
Clinton tops the Democratic primary pack with 65 percent of all Democrats, followed by Vice President Joseph Biden with 8 percent, U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts with 7 percent and no other contender above 3 percent. Another 13 percent are undecided.

The Republican primary contest is mixed, with Sen. Paul and U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin at 13 percent each, Christie at 12 percent, Jeb Bush at 11 percent and no other candidate above 9 percent. Another 22 percent are undecided.

House and Senate Races

The generic 2014 ballot for the U.S. House of Representative is tied, with 38 percent they would vote Republican and 37 percent saying they would vote Democratic.

But 45 percent of voters want Democrats to control the House of Representatives, while 43 percent want Republican control. Looking at the U.S. Senate, 44 percent want Democrats in control and 43 percent want Republicans.

Democrats have a 10-point lead in the "disapproval race" as voters disapprove 66 - 27 percent of the job Democrats in Congress are doing, while they disapprove 76 - 17 percent of Republicans in Congress.

From January 15 - 19, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,933 registered voters nationwide with a margin of error of +/- 2.2 percentage points. The survey includes 813 Republicans with a margin of error of +/- 3.4 percentage points and 803 Democrats with a margin of error of +/- 3.5 percentage points. Live interviewers call land lines and cell phones.

The Quinnipiac University Poll, directed by Douglas Schwartz, Ph.D., conducts public opinion surveys in Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Florida, Ohio, Virginia, Iowa, Colorado and the nation as a public service and for research.
