June 12, 2003 - Bush, Lieberman Religion Has Little Influence, Americans Tell Quinnipiac University National Poll; Large Majorities Favor School Prayer, God In Pledge
The fact that President George W. Bush and Connecticut Sen. Joseph Lieberman, a possible Democratic challenger for President, are religious has little impact on whether Americans will vote for them, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today.

Only 18 percent of Americans say they are more likely to vote for President Bush because he is a born again Christian, with 11 percent less likely and 69 percent who say it makes no difference in how they vote.

Six percent are more likely to vote for Sen. Lieberman because he is an Orthodox Jew, with 6 percent who are less likely and 85 percent who say it makes no difference, the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University poll finds. Other findings are:
  • 92 percent of Americans believe in God;
  • 74 percent believe in life after death;
  • 57 percent say religion is "very important" in their own lives, while 24 percent say it is "fairly important;"
  • 63 percent are members of a religious congregation;
  • 39 percent are 'churchgoers,' attending services every week or almost every week.
"Americans insist they reject a religious test for public office. They say that neither President Bush's born again Christianity nor Sen. Lieberman's Orthodox Judaism would influence how they vote," said Maurice Carroll, director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute.

"We're a religious country and we strongly disagree with the courts on prayer in the public schools and on keeping God in the Pledge of Allegiance," Carroll said.

A total of 67 percent of Americans say religious and spiritual values have "a lot" or "some" influence on politics and public policy. Religion should have more influence, 43 percent of Americans, including 61 percent of churchgoers, say.

By a 69 - 27 percent margin, Americans support organized prayer in public schools, with 82 percent of churchgoers supporting prayer.

By an 89 - 6 percent margin, Americans say keep the phrase "under God" in the Pledge of Allegiance; 96 percent of churchgoers want to keep God in the Pledge.

When asked if they favor or oppose the death penalty, Americans favor 65 - 25 percent. But when asked if they favor the death penalty or life in prison with no chance of parole, Americans split with 45 percent for life in prison and 44 percent for death.

On other policy issues with direct or indirect religious links:
  • Americans approve 70 - 22 percent the use of federal grants for religious sites designated as landmarks;
  • 21 percent say abortion should be legal in all cases; 33 percent say legal in most cases; 24 percent say illegal in most cases and 17 percent say illegal in all cases;
  • 50 percent say homosexual relations between adults should be legal, with 38 percent opposed.
"Among churchgoers, people who attend religious services almost every week, there is a clear shift against abortion and homosexuality," Carroll said.

From June 4 - 9, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,015 adults nationwide, with a margin of error of +/- 3.1 percent.

The Quinnipiac University Poll, directed by Douglas Schwartz, Ph.D., conducts public opinion surveys in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Pennsylvania and nationwide as a public service and for research.
