February 22, 2002 - American Voters Give Bush 76 - 16 Percent Approval, Quinnipiac University Poll Finds; Colin Powell Gets 85 - 8 Percent Approval
American voters approve 76 - 16 percent of the job George W. Bush is doing as President, according to a Quinnipiac University national poll released today.

This is a slight drop from President Bush's 83 - 11 percent approval in a December 11, 2001, national poll by the independent Quinnipiac University.

Secretary of State Colin Powell gets an even higher 85 - 8 percent approval, while Vice President Dick Cheney gets the lowest rating on the Bush team, 58 - 20 percent.

Looking at Bush's handling of different areas, American voters approve:
  • 62 - 30 percent of his handling of the economy;
  • 72 - 19 percent of his handling of foreign policy;
  • 81 - 14 percent of his handling the war on terrorism overseas;
  • 80 - 15 percent of his policies to prevent and minimize terrorism at home.
"Americans support President Bush in every area measured, mostly for his response to terrorism at home and abroad, and even for his handling of the economy," said Maurice Carroll, director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute. "And Colin Powell is off the charts."

"More good news for the President: Americans say they are satisfied with the way things are going in the nation. That's always a good sign for incumbents."

Fifteen percent of American voters are "very satisfied" with the way things are going in the U.S., while 52 percent are "somewhat satisfied;" 21 percent are "somewhat dissatisfied," and 11 percent are "very dissatisfied."

In an open-ended question, allowing for any answer, 32 percent of U.S. voters list terrorism as the most important problem facing the nation today, followed by 27 percent who list the economy.

Americans split over who they want to control Congress after the November, 2002, mid-term elections, with 41 percent picking the Democrats and 39 percent picking the Republicans.

Rating the Bush team, American voters approve:
  • 58 - 20 percent of the job Dick Cheney is doing as Vice President;
  • 76 - 11 percent of the job Donald Rumsfeld is doing as Secretary of Defense;
  • 85 - 8 percent of the job Colin Powell is doing as Secretary of State;
  • 65 - 10 percent of the job Condoleeza Rice is doing as National Security Advisor;
  • 65 - 19 percent of the job John Ashcroft is doing as Attorney General;
  • 59 - 15 percent of the job Tom Ridge is doing as Director of Homeland Security.
Levels of legal immigration to the U.S. should be decreased, 55 percent of voters say, while 12 percent say they should be increased and 29 percent say they should be kept the same. Americans support 77 - 17 percent stricter controls on foreign student visas, and back 77 - 18 percent stricter penalties for illegal immigrants.

By a 65 - 31 percent margin, voters favor making it more difficult for any foreigner to enter the U.S.

"Even in this nation of immigrants, most Americans would like to curb immigration - legal and illegal," Carroll said.

"And by a big 67 - 24 percent margin, voters say the U.S. should knock out at least one `Axis of Evil' country by forcefully toppling Saddam Hussein from power in Iraq."

By a 70 - 23 percent margin, American voters support federal legislation to curb contributions to national political parties.

From February 13 - 19, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,107 registered voters nationwide, with a margin of error of +/- 3 percent.

The Quinnipiac University Poll, directed by Douglas Schwartz, Ph.D., conducts public opinion surveys as a public service and for research.
