December 26, 2005 - 2006 Will Be Better For Them, But No Peace On Earth, Americans Tell Quinnipiac University National Poll; Most Will Watch Times Square Ball Drop On TV
By a 79 - 10 percent margin, American voters think 2006 will be better than 2005 for them personally, according to a Quinnipiac University national poll released today, and voters say 53 - 33 percent that 2005 was better for them than 2004.

Optimism decreases with age, the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University poll finds, as 93 percent of voters under 30 years old think next year will be better, compared to 63 percent of voters 65 and older.

The world will be less peaceful in 2006, American voters say 52 - 36 percent. Here, the optimism is reversed, as 56 percent of voters under 30 expect the world to be less peaceful, compared with 41 percent of voters 65 and older.

Most Americans, 71 percent, plan to celebrate New Year's Eve at home or at the home of a friend or relative, with 11 percent who say they're going out and 14 percent who do not celebrate.

And 69 percent of all Americans say they'll mark the New Year by watching the ball drop in Times Square.

"Americans - especially young Americans - are an optimistic people. Despite the gloom and doom in the world, and their own belief that peace on earth is not in sight, we believe our own lives are getting better," said Maurice Carroll, director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute.

"Despite the common assumption that New Year's Eve is a wall-to-wall party, this poll finds that most people will be safe at home celebrating with friends and/or family, with the Times Square countdown in the background," Carroll added.

From November 28 - December 4, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,230 registered voters, with a margin of error of +/- 2.8 percentage points.

The Quinnipiac University Poll, directed by Douglas Schwartz, Ph.D., conducts public opinion surveys in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Florida and nationwide as a public service and for research.
