August 24, 2010 - New Yorkers Give 'Jersey Shore' A Black Eye, Garden State Voters Tell Quinnipiac University Poll; Reality Show Is Bad For The State, Voters Say

Word format

While 35 percent of New Jersey voters agree with Gov. Christopher Christie that the people on the "Jersey Shore" reality show act badly because they're New Yorkers, 19 percent agree with New York Gov. David Paterson that the Jersey Shore environment causes people to act badly, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today. Another 46 percent are undecided.

Men agree with Gov. Christie and blame New York 40 - 20 percent. Women blame New York 31 - 18 percent, with 51 percent undecided, the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe- ack) University poll finds. Democrats split 25 - 25 percent, with 50 percent undecided, while Republicans blame New Yorkers 44 - 17 percent, as do independent voters 37 - 18 percent.

New Jersey voters say 54 - 20 percent that the reality show is bad for the Garden State. In a bi-partisan show of unity, Republicans agree 57 - 18 percent while Democrats agree 52 - 22 percent. Men say the show is bad for the state 51 - 25 percent and women agree 57 - 15 percent.

By a 51 - 11 percent margin, voters have an unfavorable opinion of "Jersey Shore."

"New Jerseyans to New York: Keep your low-lifes at home and away from our seashore," said Maurice Carroll, director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute. "Garden State voters don't like the show and believe it's bad for the state. They back Gov. Christopher Christie over Gov. David Paterson almost 2-1 in deciding who to blame for the hijinx of Snooki, The Situation and the rest."

From August 9 - 17, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,190 New Jersey voters, with a margin of error of +/- 2.8 percentage points.

The Quinnipiac University Poll, directed by Douglas Schwartz, Ph.D., conducts public opinion surveys in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Florida, Ohio and nationally as a public service and for research.
