August 4, 2004 - Corruption Cases Take Toll On McGreevey Approval, Quinnipiac University Poll Finds; Governor Still Tops Fed Prosecutor, Other Contenders
A slight majority of New Jersey voters - 53 percent - say corruption charges against two Democratic fund-raisers give them serious concerns about Gov. James McGreevey's honesty and integrity, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today. Another 31 percent say the corruption cases do not give them concerns about the Governor.

Gov. McGreevey's approval has dropped to a negative 38 - 47 percent rating, reversing an upward trend which saw his approval reach 45 - 39 percent in a June 22 poll by the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University.

Voters split 37 - 38 percent on whether they would like Sen. Jon Corzine to challenge McGreevey for the Democratic nomination for Governor next year. And McGreevey tops several possible Republican challengers:
  • 38 - 32 percent over Diane Allen;
  • 40 - 37 percent over Bret Schundler;
  • 41 - 34 percent over Douglas Forrester;
  • 40 - 27 percent over Christopher Christie.
"The corruption scandal involving two fund-raisers has sent Gov. McGreevey's approval rating back into negative territory just as he was staging a comeback. A majority of voters say the scandal gives them serious concerns about his honesty and integrity," said Clay F. Richards, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute.

"A quarter of all Democratic voters and 46 percent of independents say they are less likely to vote for McGreevey because of the scandals," Richards added.

"While this is certainly bad news for McGreevey, he still comes out on top on matchups with potential GOP rivals, including Federal Prosecutor Christopher Christie. McGreevey is hearing at least one set of footsteps: Former Mayor Bret Schundler, who lost to McGreevey in 2001, is within the margin of error of catching him."

Voters disagree 45 - 39 percent with McGreevey's claim that the federal investigation which has resulted in the charges against two fund-raisers is politically motivated; 41 percent say the corruption cases leave them less likely to vote for McGreevey next year, while 50 percent say the charges won't affect their vote.

McGreevey's scores on character issues have dropped, with New Jersey voters saying:
  • 43 - 47 percent that McGreevey has strong leadership qualities;
  • 43 - 42 percent that he is honest and trustworthy;
  • 45 - 45 percent that he cares about their needs and problems.
The Governor gets a negative 41 - 47 percent approval for handling the economy and jobs, a negative 28 - 61 percent for handling property taxes, and a negative 21 - 53 percent for appointments to high positions.

Seventeen percent of New Jersey voters have received property rebate checks in the last few weeks and 51 percent are expecting checks. Of those who have received or are expecting checks, 24 percent give McGreevey a lot of credit for the rebates, as 40 percent give him a little credit and 29 percent give him no credit.

From July 30 - August 2, Quinnipiac University surveyed 996 New Jersey registered voters, with a margin of error of +/- 3.1 percentage points.

The Quinnipiac University Poll, directed by Douglas Schwartz, Ph.D., conducts public opinion surveys in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Florida and nationally as a public service and for research. For additional data -- www.quinnipiac.edu and quicklinks or call (203) 582-5201.
