March 7, 2002 - New Jersey Voters Back Car Cell Phone Ban 5 - 1, Quinnipiac University Poll Finds; 77 % Are Very Concerned About Auto Insurance
By an 85 - 14 percent margin, New Jersey voters say it's a good idea to ban the use of hand-held cell phones while driving, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today. Even cell phone owners, 69 percent of those surveyed, back the ban on car use 84 - 15 percent.

A ban on hand-held cell phones would contribute a great deal to making driving in New Jersey safer, 45 percent of voters say, while 38 percent say it would contribute some to making roads safer.

Enforcing such a ban would be very easy, 15 percent of voters say, while 22 percent say it would be somewhat easy; 43 percent say it would be somewhat difficult and 19 percent say it would be very difficult.

"A huge majority of New Jersey voters, even cell phone owners, say drivers should keep their hands on the wheel, not on the phone," said Maurice Carroll, director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute.

"Use of hands-free cell phones would make driving safer, voters say, but the law would be difficult to enforce."

Looking at a number of issues in the state, 77 percent of New Jersey voters say they are "very concerned" about the cost of auto insurance. Looking at other issues:
  • 66 percent are very concerned about local property taxes;
  • 58 percent are very concerned about pollution;
  • 55 percent are very concerned about traffic;
  • 52 percent are very concerned about crime;
  • 52 percent are very concerned about state taxes;
  • 47 percent are very concerned about terrorism;
  • 35 percent are very concerned about racial profiling.
"Only in New Jersey: Asked about a number of issues, voters' highest level of concern is the cost of auto insurance," Carroll said.

Gov. James McGreevey's approval stands at 46 - 22 percent, with 32 percent undecided, compared to a 42 - 19 percent approval, with 39 percent undecided, in a January 31 poll by the independent Quinnipiac University.

President Bush's approval is 77 - 18 percent, compared with 82 - 13 percent January 31.

"One-third of New Jersey voters are still taking the measure of their new governor and are undecided on his job performance so far," Carroll said.

From February 26 - March 4, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,005 New Jersey registered voters, with a margin of error of +/- 3.1 percent.

The Quinnipiac University Poll, directed by Douglas Schwartz, Ph.D., conducts public opinion surveys in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut as a public service and for research.
