March 12, 2001 - New Jersey Voters Back Parental Abortion Notice 3 - 1, Quinnipiac Universtiy Poll Finds; They Back Ban On Driving With Cell Phones 7 - 1
New Jersey voters favor 76 - 21 percent requiring parental notification before a minor receives an abortion, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today.

And by a 63 - 33 percent margin, voters support a state constitutional amendment to require parental notification for abortions.

Women support a constitutional amendment for parental abortion notification 64 - 32 percent, while men back the proposal 61 - 35 percent, the poll by the independent Quinnipiac University finds.

Looking at the broader abortion issue, 47 percent of voters say abortion should be generally available, while 35 percent say abortion should be available with stricter limits, and 16 percent say abortion should not be permitted.

Among the 47 percent who say abortion should be generally available, support for parental notification is 59 - 36 percent. But this same group opposes 51 - 46 percent a state constitutional amendment to require parental notification.

From February 28 - March 4, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,129 New Jersey registered voters, with a margin of error of +/- 2.9 percent.

"New Jersey voters are generally pro-choice, but they draw the line at parental notification. `If a doctor is doing something to my child, I want to know about it,' they're telling us," said Maurice Carroll, director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute.

"There is slight drop in support when voters think about actually amending the state constitution, but that support still brushes up against 2 - 1," Carroll added. Cell Phones

By a huge 86 - 12 margin, New Jersey voters support state legislation which would ban the use of hand-held cell phones while driving. Even cell phone owners support the ban 83 - 15 percent.

Banning hand-held cell phone use by drivers would improve highway safety "a great deal," according to 43 percent of voters, while 41 percent say the measure would improve safety "some."

Enforcing a cell-phone ban would be "very easy" or "somewhat easy," 33 percent of voters say, while 66 percent say enforcement would be "somewhat difficult" or "very difficult."

"New Jersey voters think drivers should keep both hands on the wheel," Carroll said.

Looking at broader traffic issues, 48 percent of voters say traffic on New Jersey's highways is a "very serious problem," while 38 percent say it is "somewhat serious."

Of the 73 percent of voters who work outside the home, 88 percent drive to work and 3 percent ride with someone else.

A total of 70 percent of voters say expanding public transportation would reduce traffic "a great deal" or "some." But only 42 percent of voters want to pay more taxes to expand public transit, while 55 percent are unwilling to pay higher taxes for transit.

The Quinnipiac University Poll, directed by Douglas Schwartz, conducts public opinion surveys in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut as a public service and for research.
