September 26, 2001 - New Jersey Voters Say 2 - 1 Rebuild World Trade Center, Quinnipiac University Poll Finds; Bush Gets 90 Percent Approval On Handling Crisis
By a 65 - 26 percent margin, New Jersey voters say the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey should rebuild the World Trade Center, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today. Nine percent are undecided.

Quinnipiac University pollsters first explained to New Jersey voters that the Trade Center was built and owned by the Port Authority, an agency controlled by the governors of New Jersey and New York. Then voters were asked if the Port Authority should rebuild the World Trade Center.

By a 90- 6 percent margin, New Jersey voters approve of the way President Bush is handling the U.S. response to the terrorist attacks. Bush gets an 88 - 8 percent overall approval rating.

From September 19 - 24 Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,406 New Jersey registered voters, with a margin of error of +/- 2.6 percent.

"New Jersey voters look past the Statue of Liberty to a Manhattan skyline marred by terrorism and say, `Build the World Trade Center again.' Since their governor has some say in any future plans, the voice of New Jersey voters is worth hearing," said Maurice Carroll, director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute.

"New Jersey voted against Abraham Lincoln, but now he is treated well in the history books. New Jersey also voted against George W. Bush, but now he gets a near-unanimous approval rating," Carroll added.

Fifteen percent of New Jersey voters are "very worried" that terror will touch their family directly, while 39 percent are "somewhat worried;" 29 percent are "not too worried," and 16 percent are "not worried at all."

The recent terrorist attacks leave 45 percent of New Jersey voters less likely to fly.

By a 48 - 42 percent margin, with 10 percent undecided, voters favor reinstating the military draft. Only 29 percent of voters expect young people to protest or evade the draft, if it is reinstated, while 63 percent think the draft would be accepted.

Forty-eight percent of voters are "very confident" the U.S. will find and punish those responsible for the terror attacks, while 42 percent are "somewhat confident;" 7 percent are "not too confident," and 2 percent are "not confident at all."

The Quinnipiac University Poll, directed by Douglas Schwartz, Ph.D., conducts public opinion surveys in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut as a public service and for research.
