February 23, 2000 - Florio Tops Corzine More Than 2 - 1 With Jersey Dems, Quinnipiac College Poll Finds; New Jersey Voters Want Emissions Tests, But Fix System
Former New Jersey Gov. James Florio tops the virtually unknown businessman Jon Corzine, 57 - 22 percent among New Jersey Democratic voters, according to a Quinnipiac College Poll released today.

If ex-presidential candidate Steve Forbes threw his hat into the Senate race, he would dominate the field of unknown GOP contenders, the independent Quinnipiac College poll finds. Forbes would get 33 percent of Republican voters. No other candidate tops 10 percent. Undecided gets 33 percent.

From February 16 - 21, Quinnipiac College surveyed 1,109 New Jersey registered voters, with a margin of error of 2.9 percent. The survey includes 307 registered Republican voters, with a margin of error of 5.6 percent and 374 registered Democrats with a margin of error of 5.1 percent.

"All that money. All that work. And it's still `Jon who?' New Jersey Democrats don't have much of an impression of Jon Corzine," said Maurice Carroll, director of the Quinnipiac College Polling Institute. "Even though Gov. Florio still gives New Jersey voters negative vibes, they at least know who he is and Democrats say they'd nominate him over Corzine. But don't underestimate the value of party endorsements in helping voters decide."

A total of 55 percent of Democratic voters say the party organization's support for a candidate in a Senate primary is "very important" or "somewhat important" in their selection.

By a 27 - 35 percent margin, New Jersey voters have a favorable opinion of Florio, with 23 percent mixed and 15 percent saying they haven't heard enough to form an opinion.
Favorability ratings among other possible Senate contenders are:

                                 Auto Emissions Testing

Asked how important it is that emissions from their car are as clean as possible, 62 percent of New Jersey voters say "very important," while 30 percent say "somewhat important."

A total of 29 percent of voters are "very satisfied" or "somewhat satisfied" with the present system of emissions testing, while 62 percent are "somewhat dissatisfied" or "very dissatisfied."

A total of 76 percent are "very concerned" or "somewhat concerned" with the amount of time it takes to have their car tested, while a total of 79 percent are "very concerned" or "somewhat concerned" with the cost of having their car tested.

Asked to choose between cost or convenience, 45 percent of New Jersey voters prefer a higher cost with faster service for auto emissions testing, while 39 percent prefer a lower cost with slower service.

"New Jersey voters want to keep their air clean, but they don't think much of the bobbles in the new system to measure auto pollution," Carroll said. "It's thumbs down on the cost of auto emission inspections and on the time they take."
