October 25, 2000 - Franks Closes Gap With Corzine In New Jersey, Quinnipiac University Poll Finds; Most Voters Voice Concern With Corzine Spending
In New Jersey's U.S. Senate race, Republican Bob Franks has narrowed the gap with Democrat Jon Corzine and now trails Corzine 46 - 41 percent among likely voters, with 13 percent undecided, according to a Quinnipiac University Poll released today.

In an October 4 poll by the independent Quinnipiac University, Corzine led 48 - 34 percent among likely voters.

Franks has scored his biggest gain among men voters, going from a 41 - 43 percent deficit October 4 to a 52 - 40 percent lead today. Women continue to back Corzine 51 - 31 percent, similar to the 52 - 28 percent margin October 4.

From October 18 - 23, Quinnipiac University surveyed 909 New Jersey likely voters, with a margin of error of +/- 3.3 percent.

"Corzine still retains a lead but only by the length of his whiskers. Who should Franks thank for this homestretch surge? Republicans coming home. Favorability and support from his own party have both risen and he now has 78 percent of the Republican vote," said Quinnipiac University Political Science Professor Scott McLean.

"As we always expected, the election will come down to which one of them can get the undecideds and independents to break his way. So far, the independents are breaking to Corzine."

Corzine's favorability among likely New Jersey voters is 30 - 26 percent, with 27 percent mixed and 15 percent who haven't heard enough to form an opinion. His favorability in the October 4 Quinnipiac University poll was 26 - 23 percent.

Franks has a 26 - 16 percent favorability, with 22 percent mixed and 34 percent who haven't heard enough to form an opinion. His favorability October 4 was 17 - 11 percent, with 55 percent who had no opinion.

Corzine leads 81 - 11 percent among Democrats, while Franks leads 78 - 13 percent among Republicans. Independent voters back Corzine by a slim 43 - 37 percent, with 21 percent undecided.

Corzine's campaign spending concerns 40 percent of likely voters "a lot," while 15 percent are concerned "some;" 3 percent are concerned "only a little" and 40 percent are not concerned at all.

Looking at Corzine's decision not to release his full tax returns, 30 percent of New Jersey likely voters say they are concerned "a lot," while 17 percent are concerned "some;" 5 percent are concerned "a little" and 46 percent are not concerned at all.

"After a month of Franks' relentless pounding on Corzine's finances in TV ads and debates, the voters are finally taking notice. By showing such passion on this issue, Franks may have fired up Republicans enough to bring them back to the fold. Now it is up to Corzine to reassure independents that he is not buying a Senate seat," Dr. McLean said.

The Quinnipiac University Poll, directed by Douglas Schwartz, conducts public opinion surveys in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut as a public service and for research.
