November 1, 2000 - Corzine Leads Franks 47 - 39 In New Jersey, Quinnipiac University Poll Finds; Undecided Independents Are Key To Final Result
In New Jersey's U.S. Senate race, Democrat Jon Corzine is holding onto a 47 - 39 percent lead over Republican Bob Franks, with 14 percent undecided, according to a Quinnipiac University Poll released today.

This is a slight gain for Corzine who led 46 - 41 percent among likely voters in an October 25 poll by the independent Quinnipiac University.

Independent voters back Corzine 44 - 38 percent, with 18 percent undecided.

Corzine has 46 percent of men voters to Franks' 44 percent, a tie. The Democrat leads 47 - 36 percent among women.

From October 24 - 30, Quinnipiac University surveyed 793 New Jersey likely voters, with a margin of error of +/- 3.5 percent.

"This month, Republicans started coming home to Franks. But negative advertising can only get you so much. Franks needs to use his McCain-like bus tour to persuade that final 18 percent of undecided independent voters to break his way. Still, it will be a bumpy ride on the bus; he has to make up for a six-point Corzine lead among independents," said Quinnipiac University Political Science Professor Scott McLean.

"More than one-third of New Jersey voters till don't know enough about Franks to form an opinion. He must hope that they learn something and form the right opinion in the next few days," said Dr. McLean.

"The worst news for Franks is that he has dropped among men, from a 52 - 40 percent lead last week to a 44 - 46 percent deficit today."

Corzine's favorability among likely New Jersey voters is 28 - 23 percent, with 32 percent mixed and 15 percent who haven't heard enough to form an opinion. His favorability in the October 25 Quinnipiac University poll was 30 - 26 percent.

Franks has a 26 - 13 percent favorability, with 23 percent mixed and 35 percent who haven't heard enough to form an opinion. His favorability October 25 was 26 - 16 percent.

The Quinnipiac University Poll, directed by Douglas Schwartz, conducts public opinion surveys in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut as a public service and for research.
