December 26, 2000 - Most New Jersey Voters Satisfied With Life In Garden State, Quinnipiac University Poll Finds; Taxes And Schools Are Seen As Biggest Problems
Ten percent of New Jersey voters are "very satisfied" with life in the Garden State, while 61 percent are "somewhat satisfied," according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today. Another 21 percent are "somewhat dissatisfied" and 7 percent are "very dissatisfied."

In an open-ended question, where voters can give any answer, a total of 25 percent list taxes as the most important problem facing New Jersey, followed by 14 percent who list education or school funding. A total of 12 percent list environment, pollution, urban sprawl or overcrowding as the most important problem.

Only 3 percent list crime, violence or drugs, and only 2 percent list the economy or unemployment, while 7 percent list auto insurance, all issues which have been on the top of the list in recent years.

"Talk about happy. New Jersey voters seem very pleased with the overall quality of life and several components, especially the state's economy," said Maurice Carroll, director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute.

From November 28 - December 4, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,261 New Jersey registered voters, with a margin of error of +/- 2.8 percent.

A total of 86 percent of voters say New Jersey's overall quality of life is "good" or "excellent." Looking at different components of that quality of life: - 82 percent say the economy is "good" or "excellent;" - 58 percent say public schools are "good" or "excellent;" - 55 percent say race relations are "good" or "excellent;" - 54 percent say the environment is "good" or "excellent."

"When we specifically ask voters about issues such as crime, auto insurance or racial profiling, they say they are very concerned or somewhat concerned," Carroll said. "But we have to ask. These issues are not on the tip of the voters' collective tongue."

The Quinnipiac University Poll, directed by Douglas Schwartz, conducts public opinion surveys in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut as a public service and for research.
