April 28, 2005 - Forrester, Schundler Neck And Neck In GOP Primary, Quinnipiac University Poll Finds; But Corzine Tops Either Republican
New Jersey likely Republican primary voters give Douglas Forrester 36 percent, to 33 percent for Bret Schundler, making the GOP race for Governor too close to call, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today. Among the five other Republican contenders, only John Murphy reaches the 5 percent mark.

Looking at this larger field, 38 percent of likely Republican voters say their mind is made up, while 61 percent say they might change their mind.

In a head to head matchup, Forrester tops Schundler 45 - 40 percent among likely Republican voters, the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University poll finds.

"Douglas Forrester and Bret Schundler are running neck and neck in the battle for the GOP nomination for New Jersey Governor, while the other candidates cannot be considered serious contenders. The real problem is that about four in 10 Republicans don't know enough about either Forrester or Schundler at this point to form an opinion, leaving the primary race wide open with a little more than five weeks to go," said Clay F. Richards, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute.

A candidate's view on the issues is most important for 68 percent of likely Republican voters, while 28 percent say the ability to beat U.S. Sen. Jon Corzine, the likely Democratic candidate for Governor, is most important.

Sen. Corzine wins a general election matchup against either possible Republican contender in the governor's race, but has lost some ground since a March 16 Quinnipiac University poll:
  • 47 - 33 percent over Schundler, compared to 50 - 34 percent March 16;
  • 46 - 36 percent over Forrester, compared to 50 - 33 percent.
"One benefit of a contested primary is that the candidates get a little more exposure and a chance to gain ground on Sen. Corzine, who has not been in the news," said Richards.

New Jersey voters give Corzine a 50 - 30 percent approval rating, almost identical to March 16. Corzine has a 34 - 21 percent favorability rating, with 24 percent mixed and 20 percent who haven't heard enough to form an opinion.

Forrester's favorability is 19 - 10 percent, with 20 percent mixed and 50 percent who haven't heard enough to form an opinion.

Schundler has a 19 - 12 percent favorability rating, with 16 percent mixed and 52 percent who haven't heard enough to form an opinion.
                        	Codey Approval

New Jersey voters approve 51 - 22 percent of the job acting Gov. Richard Codey is doing. A total of 42 percent of voters are "very satisfied" or "somewhat satisfied" with the way things are going in New Jersey, while 57 percent are "somewhat dissatisfied" or " very dissatisfied."

From April 19 - 26, Quinnipiac University surveyed 2,006 New Jersey registered voters, with a margin of error of +/- 2.2 percentage points. The survey includes 366 likely Republican primary voters, with a margin of error of +/- 5.1 percentage points.

The Quinnipiac University Poll, directed by Douglas Schwartz, Ph.D., conducts public opinion surveys in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Florida and nationally as a public service and for research. For additional data -- www.quinnipiac.edu and quicklinks or call (203) 582-5201.
