July 26, 1999 - Favorite Son Bill Bradley Tops Bush, Gore In New Jersey, Quinnipiac College Poll Finds; Bush Beats Gore 51 - 40 In Presidential Race
Former Sen. Bill Bradley beats Vice President Al Gore 54 - 35 percent in a New Jersey Democratic Primary, according to a Quinnipiac College Poll released today.

If Bradley faced Texas Gov. George W. Bush, the Republican, in a presidential election in New Jersey, the native son would win 53 - 38 percent, the independent Quinnipiac College Poll finds.

In a Gore-Bush presidential matchup, the Republican wins 51 - 40 percent.

Bush wins a GOP primary in New Jersey hands down, with 57 percent of the vote. Former Red Cross Director Elizabeth Dole gets 10 percent and no other Republican contender tops 7 percent.

"New Jersey has been a swing state in presidential politics, but only Bill Bradley seems to swing it Democratic in 2000," said Maurice Carroll, director of the Quinnipiac College Polling Institute.

"Bradley exemplifies Tip O'Neill's dictum that all politics is local. His New Jersey neighbors tell the Quinnipiac College Poll that they like him a lot more than any other possible presidential candidate, Democrat or Republican.

"And it's a slam-dunk for the ex-Knick in a Democratic primary against Gore."

By a 61 - 11 percent margin, New Jersey voters have a favorable opinion of Bradley, while 18 percent have a mixed opinion and 10 percent haven't heard enough to form an opinion. Among the other possible candidates:

Bob Smith 6 15 7 71

"Despite his claim to native son status, Steve Forbes doesn't score in New Jersey," Carroll said.

"Voters like Bush and Dole. In fact, Bush went from a hardly well-known candidate in an April 1 Quinnipiac College Poll, when 36 percent of voters didn't know enough to form an opinion, to a healthy 45 - 22 percent favorability rating today, with only 13 percent saying they don't know enough about him.

"The other Republican contenders are no-names. The exceptions are Buchanan and Quayle, and the bad news is the voters know them, but don't like them."

From July 13 - 20, Quinnipiac College surveyed 1,082 New Jersey residents who say they are registered voters. The poll has a margin of error of +/- 3 percent.

The Quinnipiac College Poll, directed by Douglas Schwartz, conducts public opinion surveys in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut as a public service and for research.
