June 6, 2005 - New Jersey GOP Primary Too Close To Call, Quinnipiac University Poll Finds; Schundler Narrows Gap In Final Days
The New Jersey Republican primary for Governor is too close to call, with 35 percent of likely Republican primary voters backing Douglas Forrester and 33 percent backing Bret Schundler, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today. At 7 percent, John Murphy has the highest tally among the five other Republican contenders. And 10 percent are undecided.

In a June 1 poll by the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University Forrester was ahead of Schundler 40 - 29 percent.

In today's survey, 69 percent of likely Republican voters say their mind is made up, while 31 percent say they might change their mind.

"No candidate in this race has generated great excitement among Republican voters. It now comes down to which contender does the best job of getting his voter's to the polls. Doug Forrester clings to the narrowest of leads, but his multi-million dollar advertising blitz has failed to establish the strong lead he hoped for. Bret Schundler, meanwhile, hasn't been able to rise above the 33 percent mark in any of the polls during the primary season," said Clay F. Richards, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute.

From May 29 - June 5, Quinnipiac University surveyed 329 New Jersey likely Republican primary voters, with a margin of error of +/- 5.4 percentage points.
