April 22, 1998 - New Jersey Voters Say No Thanks To Yanks, Quinnipiac College Poll Finds; Most Voters Are Perfect Together With Garden State
Only 27 percent of New Jersey voters want the Yankees to move to the Garden State, while 48 percent say they should stay in New York, with 25 percent undecided, according to a Quinnipiac College Poll released today. But 64 percent of voters say they are most likely to attend a Yankees game in the Meadowlands, while 9 percent are most likely to go to Yankee Stadium in The Bronx and 6 percent prefer a new stadium on Manhattan's West Side.

These findings are unchanged from a December 12, 1996, poll by the independent Quinnipiac College, two months after the Yankees won the World Series.

If the Yankees did move to New Jersey, 59 percent of voters want the team to pay for a new stadium, while 24 percent say an independent authority should pay and 6 percent say the state should pay.

While 37 percent of New Jersey voters say they are Yankees fans, 54 percent of all voters say they have been to at least one Yankee home game.

In North and Central New Jersey, 42 - 43 percent say they are Yankees fans, while support drops to 22 percent in South Jersey, closer to Philadelphia. In North Jersey, 30 percent of voters would welcome the Yankees, dropping to 22 percent in South Jersey.

"With apologies to Ogden Nash: `The Yanks, no thanks,' is the message from New Jersey voters. Despite Gov. Whitman's words of welcome, there is little support to plant The Bombers in the Garden State," said Maurice Carroll, director of the Quinnipiac College Polling Institute.

"And if the Yankees did move, the team should pay for a new stadium, say the frugal voters of New Jersey. That said, two-thirds of voters would be most likely to see the Yankees if the team played in the Meadowlands, rather than The Bronx or Manhattan."

A total of 85 percent of New Jersey voters say the Garden State is a very good or fairly good place to live, while 14 percent say it's fairly bad or very bad.

When asked to rate their home town or city as a place to live, New Jersey voters give similar numbers, 88 - 11 percent.

A total of 77 percent say New Jersey is a very good or fairly good place to take a vacation, while 21 percent say it's fairly bad or very bad.

By a 63 - 29 percent margin, voters say they would encourage others to move to the Garden State.

In an open-ended question, where respondents can give any answer, 23 percent say the best thing about New Jersey is its closeness to metropolitan areas, with entertainment and other attractions, while 18 percent point to beaches and mountains and 12 percent list general convenience or central location.

The worst thing about New Jersey are taxes and auto insurance, each getting 20 percent, while 13 percent list traffic or the turnpike.

"Location. Location. Location. That's what New Jersey voters like best about their state. They may not want to live in New York or Philadelphia, but they think it's great to be near the big cities," Carroll said.

From April 15 - 20, Quinnipiac College surveyed 860 New Jersey residents who say they are registered voters. The poll has a margin of error of +/- 3.3 percent.

The Quinnipiac College Poll, directed by Douglas Schwartz, conducts public opinion surveys in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut as a public service and for research.
