November 2, 2005 - Corzine Leads Forrester By 12 Points In New Jersey, Quinnipiac University Poll Finds; Democrat Inches Ahead On Property Tax, Corruption
Democratic U. S. Sen. Jon Corzine leads Republican Douglas Forrester 50 - 38 percent among likely voters in the race for Governor of New Jersey, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today. Nine percent are undecided.

This compares to a 50 - 43 percent Corzine lead among likely voters in an October 19 poll by the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University.

In today's survey, Republicans back Forrester 82 - 10 percent, while Democrats back Corzine 82 - 7 percent and independent voters back the Democrat 45 - 41 percent.

New Jersey voters now say 38- 35 percent that Corzine would do a better job reducing property taxes, an issue on which Forrester had led in previous polls.

In a similar shift, voters say 39 - 36 percent that Corzine would do a better job handling corruption.

"Sen. Corzine's spending advantage in the New Jersey Governor's race appears to have stopped Doug Forrester's momentum in the contest. The relentless barrage of negative advertising seems to be moving voters behind Corzine in two critical areas where Forrester led earlier in the campaign - who will more effectively deal with corruption in Trenton and which candidate has the better plan to reduce property taxes," said Clay F. Richards, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute.

"With a week to go, the only close battle in this campaign is whose ads are more unfair. Among voters who have seen the ads, 61 percent say the Forrester ads are unfair to Corzine, while 58 percent say Corzine's ads are unfair to the Republican contender," Richards added.

Forrester's favorable-unfavorable rating among likely voters has slipped from 39 - 16 percent September 28 to 32 - 25 percent today, with 29 percent mixed.

Corzine's favorable-unfavorable score has dropped from 42 - 22 percent to 41 - 31 percent, with 22 percent mixed.

Voters say 67 - 24 percent that Corzine has the right kind of experience to be Governor, compared to 54 - 30 percent for Forrester.

From October 24 - 30, Quinnipiac University surveyed 636 likely voters with a margin of error of +/- 3.9 percentage points.
