November 6, 2006 - Menendez Has 5-Point Lead In Senate Race, Quinnipiac University New Jersey Poll Finds
In the New Jersey Senate race, Democratic incumbent U.S. Sen. Robert Menendez has a 48 - 43 percent likely voter lead over Republican State Sen. Tom Kean, Jr., according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today. Nine percent remain undecided and 8 percent of those who name a candidate say they might change their mind before Election Day.

This compares to a 49 - 44 percent Sen. Menendez lead in an October 31 poll by the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University.

In this latest survey, Republican likely voters back Kean 92 - 5 percent, while Democrats back Menendez 85 - 10 percent. Independent voters back Menendez 48 - 36 percent, compared to 47 - 43 percent October 31.

Women back the Democrat 47 - 44 percent, while men back him 48 - 42 percent.

"It looks like Sen. Robert Menendez has survived the ethics questions blocking his quest for a full term in the Senate, but in New Jersey you never count out a Republican named Tom Kean until the votes are tallied," said Clay F. Richards, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute.

From October 30 - November 5, Quinnipiac University surveyed 917 New Jersey likely voters with a margin of error of +/- 3.2 percentage points.

The Quinnipiac University Poll, directed by Douglas Schwartz, Ph.D., conducts public opinion surveys in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Florida, Ohio and nationally as a public service and for research.
