October 19, 2011 - Bloomberg Losing Focus As Approval Sags, New Yorkers Tell Quinnipiac University Poll; Kelly, Quinn Lead 2013 Mayoral Pack

Word format

New York City voters say 52 - 41 percent that Mayor Michael Bloomberg has lost his focus during his third term and give the mayor a 47 - 42 percent job approval rating, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today.

Riding the surge from his handling of Tropical Storm Irene, Mayor Bloomberg scored a 54 - 35 percent job approval score in a September 12 survey by the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University. Today's score is close to his 45 - 43 percent approval July 27.

Republicans say 64 - 34 percent that Bloomberg has lost his focus and Democrats agree 52 - 41 percent. Independent voters split with 49 percent saying he's kept his focus and 47 percent saying he's lost it.

Regardless of how they feel about the mayor's policies, New York City voters like him as a person 60 - 25 percent.

"The job-approval bounce Mayor Michael Bloomberg got from his handling of Tropical Storm Irene has faded. He's back in the third-term blahs and slightly more than half of the neighbors think Hizzoner has lost focus," said Maurice Carroll, director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute.

"But New Yorkers still like Mayor Mike, whether or not they agree with him."

Police Commissioner Ray Kelly gets a 66 - 24 percent approval rating, including 78 - 15 percent among white voters, 51 - 39 percent among black voters and 58 - 26 percent among Hispanic voters.

The mayor's other key appointee, Schools Chancellor Dennis Walcott, gets a 39 - 33 percent approval rating, with 28 percent undecided. White voters approve 33 - 29 percent while black voters approve 50 - 30 percent. Hispanic voters disapprove 46 - 28 percent.

With 25 percent of New York City voters, including 17 percent of Democrats, Kelly leads the pack of possible candidates in an early look at the 2013 mayoral election. Other results are:
  • City Council Speaker Christine Quinn - 17 percent, with 22 percent of Democrats;
  • Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz - 14 percent, with 15 percent of Democrats;
  • City Comptroller John Liu - 10 percent, with 10 percent of Democrats;
  • Former City Comptroller William Thompson - 8 percent, with 9 percent of Democrats;
  • Public Advocate Bill de Blasio - 6 percent, with 7 percent of Democrats;
  • Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer - 5 percent, with 6 percent of Democrats.
With Kelly out of the race, Quinn gets 22 percent of the vote, including 25 percent of Democrats. Other results are:
  • Markowitz - 17 percent, with 18 percent of Democrats;
  • Liu - 11 percent, with 11 percent of Democrats;
  • Thompson - 10 percent, with 12 percent of Democrats;
  • de Blasio - 8 percent, with 9 percent of Democrats;
  • Stringer - 7 percent, with 7 percent of Democrats.
"Who should get the top job when Bloomberg finishes his third term? Police Commissioner Ray Kelly leads the pack, although most politicians doubt he'll run. With Kelly out of the race, Council Speaker Christine Quinn is on top, with Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz, Comptroller John Liu and 2009 mayoral candidate William Thompson in double digits," Carroll said.

New York City voters approve 62 - 33 percent of the job President Barack Obama is doing and approve 51 - 34 percent of the way he is handling the situation between Israel and the Palestinians. Voters say 58 - 28 percent that President Obama is a strong supporter of Israel.

"New York continues to support President Barack Obama, no matter how badly his numbers look just about everywhere else. In an issue that got the prez some negative attention in the Brooklyn-Queens special congressional election, the strength of his support for Israel, New Yorkers think he's okay," Carroll.

From October 12 - 16, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,068 registered voters with a margin of error of +/- 3 percentage points. Live interviewers call land lines and cell phones.
