August 15, 2012 - New Yorkers Most Biased Against Atheists, Born-Agains, Quinnipiac University Poll Finds; Quinn, Undecided Dominate Mayoral Dem Primary

Word format

The great majority of New York City voters say they are not prejudiced, but more New Yorkers are less likely to vote for an atheist or born-again Christian than a Muslim or a Mormon, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today.

Looking at candidates for public office, 30 percent of voters say they would be less likely to vote for an atheist and 27 percent say they would be less likely to vote for a born-again Christian, the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University poll finds. In each case, 61 percent of voters say these religious positions would not affect their vote. Looking at other beliefs or characteristics:
  • 24 percent are less likely to vote for a Mormon, while 70 percent say it wouldn't matter;
  • 19 percent are less likely to vote for a Muslim while 76 percent say it wouldn't matter;
  • 16 percent are less likely to vote for an overweight or obese person, while 81 percent say it wouldn't matter;
  • 14 percent are more likely to vote for a woman, with 84 percent saying it wouldn't matter. One percent say they are less likely to vote for a woman;
  • 10 percent are less likely to vote for a gay or lesbian, while 84 percent say it wouldn't matter.
"In our measure of prejudice, only the two ends of the religious spectrum - atheists and born-again Christians - draw significant negatives," said Maurice Carroll, director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute. "In every case except a woman candidate, no more than 10 percent of New Yorkers say they are more likely to vote for someone because of religion or other characteristics, and in every case, more than 60 percent say it doesn't matter.

"Good vibes for a couple of politicians - City Council Speaker Christine Quinn, who's female and gay, and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, who's not in our city poll but who is stout. About one quarter of New Yorkers have reservations about a Mormon candidate, such as Mitt Romney, as if that matters in this overwhelmingly Democratic city."

Council Speaker Quinn is the choice of 29 percent of Democrats in an early look at the 2013 Mayoral Primary, with 34 percent undecided. Results for other possible contenders are:
  • 10 percent for former City Comptroller William Thompson;
  • 9 percent for City Comptroller John Liu;
  • 9 percent for Public Advocate Bill de Blasio;
  • 4 percent for Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer.
  • 1 percent for newspaper publisher Tom Allon.
"City Council Speaker Christine Quinn is the early favorite in the Democratic primary for mayor, which could be the only race that counts if Republicans don't find a candidate. She's almost up there with 'undecided.' Former Comptroller William Thompson, City Comptroller John Liu and Public Advocate Bill de Blasio are battling for the silver medal."

New York City voters approve 51 - 40 percent of the job Mayor Michael Bloomberg is doing, virtually unchanged for three months. Quinn gets a 56 - 27 percent approval rating, with 43 - 31 percent for Liu and 45 - 16 percent for de Blasio.

Chick-fil-A

A business owner's controversial or unpopular opinions should not affect the ability to get government permits to do business, New York City voters say 74 - 15 percent, with strong support among every group and in every borough. Elected officials should not try to discourage people from patronizing such a business, voters say 81 - 10 percent, again with strong support from all groups.

Elected officials should not try to prevent advertising of unpopular opinions on buses, subways or other public spaces, voters say 67 - 23 percent.

In the specific case of Chick-fil-A, voters say:
  • 82 - 12 percent say there should be no impact on the company's ability to get permits;
  • 83 - 11 percent say elected officials should not try to discourage people from patronizing the company.
"New Yorkers may disagree with what you say, but they defend your right to sell chicken," Carroll said.

From August 8 - 12, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,298 New York City voters with a margin of error of +/- 2.7 percentage points. Live interviewers call land lines and cell phones.

The Quinnipiac University Poll, directed by Douglas Schwartz, Ph.D., conducts public opinion surveys in Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Florida, Ohio, Virginia and the nation as a public service and for research.
