March 18, 2014 - New York City Mayor's Approval Rating Drops, Quinnipiac University Poll Finds; Despite Strong Optimism, He Trails Bratton, Stringer
PDF format

New York City voters approve 45 - 34 percent of the job Mayor Bill de Blasio is doing, below Police Commissioner William Bratton's 57 - 13 percent approval rating and City Comptroller Scott Stringer's 53 - 12 percent score, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today.

Mayor de Blasio's approval rating is down from a 53 - 13 percent score in a January 16 survey by the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University. A March 27, 2002, survey showed newly-elected Mayor Michael Bloomberg with a 62 - 16 percent approval rating.

By a 65 - 29 percent margin, New York City voters are optimistic about the next four years under Mayor de Blasio. The new mayor will make life better for them and their families, 33 percent of voters say, while 22 percent say he will make life worse and 38 percent say he will have no effect.

The mayor's approval is 47 - 32 percent among men, 44 - 36 percent among women, 60 - 22 percent among black voters and 47 - 28 percent among Hispanic voters. White voters give him a negative 39 - 45 percent approval rating. Democrats approve 55 - 27 percent, while Republicans disapprove 75 - 16 percent. Independent voters are divided as 36 percent approve and 38 percent disapprove.

"After an uneven first couple of months in office, only so-so numbers for New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio as he prepares to confront the media at Saturday's Inner Circle show," said Quinnipiac University Poll Assistant Director Maurice Carroll.

"Mayor de Blasio's overall job-approval numbers are off a bit, but still positive. And he gets solid marks on the standard pollster traits - leadership, honesty and understands people's problems."

"But his hand-picked police commissioner, William Bratton, and his fellow city-wide elected official, Comptroller Scott Stringer, both out-score him," Carroll added.

"Voters think his young administration is handling crime and taxes right and they say 60 - 27 percent that the media is being fair to the new mayor."

New York City men and women agree in their approval of Bratton, who also wins positive grades from all parties and races, 63 - 10 percent among white voters, 61 - 14 percent among black voters and 48 - 20 percent among Hispanic voters.

On the optimism measures, there are almost no gender gaps, but wide racial gaps:
  • Black voters are optimistic about the city 81 - 13 percent and Hispanic voters are optimistic 69 - 21 percent, with white voter optimism at 51 - 45 percent;
  • The mayor will make their life better rather than worse, black voters say 43 - 11 percent and Hispanic voters say 34 - 14 percent, while white voters say 33 - 26 percent their life will get worse.
Overall, de Blasio will make New York City better, 46 percent of voters say, while 27 percent say worse and 19 percent say he will have no effect.

The mayor gets strong character ratings as voters say:
  • 56 - 33 percent he has strong leadership qualities;
  • 62 - 21 percent that he is honest and trustworthy;
  • 57 - 35 percent that he understands their problems.
Voters approve 58 - 23 percent of the way de Blasio is handling crime, 44 - 32 percent of the way he is handling taxes and 58 - 37 percent of the way he is handling this winter's snowstorms.

Public Advocate Letitia James gets a 44 - 16 percent approval rating, with 41 - 15 percent for City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito.

New York City voters approve 68 - 24 percent of the way police are doing their job, the highest score since a 70 - 23 percent approval rating January 17, 2013. Approval is 81 - 13 percent among white voters, 56 - 38 percent among black voters and 60 - 29 percent among Hispanic voters.

From March 12 - 17, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,234 New York City voters, with a margin of error of +/- 2.8 percentage points. Live interviewers call land lines and cell phones.

The Quinnipiac University Poll, directed by Douglas Schwartz, Ph.D., conducts public opinion surveys in Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Florida, Ohio, Virginia, Iowa, Colorado and the nation as a public service and for research.
