June 11, 2014 - New York City Mayor's Approval Is Up, With Racial Gap, Quinnipiac University Poll Finds; New Yorkers Like Horses 2-1, But Mixed On Ferrets
PDF format

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio's job approval rating is up to 51 - 28 percent, but the gap between approval by black and white voters persists, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today.

Today's approval compares to a 45 - 34 percent approval rating for Mayor de Blasio in a March 18 survey by the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University and brings him back almost to his 53 - 13 percent score in a January 16 poll.

In today's survey, black voters approve 66 - 14 percent, compared to 60 - 22 percent in March, and Hispanic voters approve 56 - 17 percent, compared to 47 - 28 percent three months ago. White voters are divided, with 41 percent approving and 42 percent disapproving. This compares to a negative 39 - 45 percent approval rating in March. Today's 25-point gap between white and black approval compares to a 21-point gap March 18.

Mayor de Blasio gets high marks on character issues as voters say 58 - 33 percent that he has strong leadership qualities, 59 - 34 percent that he understands their problems and 64 - 23 percent that he is honest and trustworthy.

"Black New Yorkers voted overwhelmingly to make Bill de Blasio the mayor. They liked him in our last poll and they like him even more now. White voters are still split, creating a widening approval gap," said Quinnipiac University Poll Assistant Director Maurice Carroll.

"This probably is not the 'Tale of Two Cities' which the mayor envisioned.

"On all the character traits - leadership, honesty, and empathy - de Blasio scores high."

New York City voters say 58 - 25 percent that media coverage of de Blasio's family has been fair, with agreement across party, gender and racial lines.

Voters also approve 58 - 15 percent of the way the mayor has responded to news media coverage of his family.

"In that dust-up between the mayor and the media over the stories about de Blasio's wife, voters agree with both sides. They say coverage of the mayor's family has been fair, but they also approve of his critique of the media," Carroll said.

Voters approve 57 - 30 percent of the way de Blasio is handling crime, 45 - 31 percent of the way he is handling taxes and 47 - 39 percent of the way he is handling the public schools.

City Comptroller Scott Stringer continues to lead the job approval parade with a 57 - 12 percent score. Approval ratings for other city-wide leaders are:
  • 41 - 15 percent for Public Advocate Letitia James;
  • 40 - 17 percent for City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito;
  • 39 - 27 percent for School Chancellor Carmen Farina. Horses and Ferrets
New York City voters say 66 - 26 percent that de Blasio should not ban horse-drawn carriages, compared to 64 - 24 percent support for carriage horses in a March 19 Quinnipiac University poll. Support for the horses is strong across party, gender and racial lines.

Voters are divided on whether the city should allow residents to own ferrets as pets, with 39 percent supporting ferrets and 42 percent opposed.

Men are ferret-friendly 43 - 37 percent, while women are anti-ferret 46 - 36 percent.

In politics, women are held to a higher standard than men, 39 percent of voters say, while 21 percent of voters say women are held to a lower standard, and 37 percent of voters say it's the same standard.

In the workplace, women have fewer opportunities than men, 55 percent of voters say, with 6 percent who say more opportunity and 36 percent who say the same.

The city should enact stricter regulations to help working mothers, voters say 79 - 14 percent, with almost no gender gap.

"There's been a flurry of talk about women's rights and voters agree that, in the workplace and in the political world, women don't get a fair shake," Carroll said.

From June 5 - 9, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,033 New York City voters, with a margin of error of +/- 3.1 percentage points. Live interviewers call land lines and cell phones.

The Quinnipiac University Poll, directed by Douglas Schwartz, Ph.D., conducts public opinion surveys in Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Florida, Ohio, Virginia, Iowa, Colorado and the nation as a public service and for research.
