July 20, 2004 - Most New Yorkers Like Mike, Quinnipiac University Poll Finds; Let Protesters Have Central Park, Voters Say
A total of 61 percent of New York City voters like Mayor Michael Bloomberg a lot or a little, while 36 percent dislike him a little or a lot, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today. The Mayor gets a 49 - 39 percent overall job approval.

Among those who dislike him, 64 percent say it's because of his policies, with 10 percent who cite his personality, 5 percent because he's a Republican and 4 percent because he's rich, the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University poll finds.

Looking at the 2005 mayoral campaign, Fernando Ferrer beats Bloomberg 46 - 39 percent. The Mayor leads other possible challengers:
  • 39 - 37 percent over Council Speaker Gifford Miller;
  • 40 - 35 percent over Comptroller William Thompson;
  • 42 - 38 percent over Manhattan Borough President C. Virginia Fields;
  • 40 - 34 percent over U.S. Rep. Anthony Weiner;
  • 43 - 31 percent over Council member Charles Barron.
New York City voters say 64 - 32 percent that Bloomberg has strong leadership qualities and 66 - 25 percent that he is honest and trustworthy. But Bloomberg is not in touch with their problems, New Yorkers say 60 - 35 percent,

"New Yorkers think Mayor Bloomberg is out of touch with them and the problems they face, but most of them still like him, at least a little," said Maurice Carroll, director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute.

"Even those who don't like the Mayor blame his policies, not his wealth or his personality," Carroll said. "So it's not personal, Mayor Mike; it's politics."

"Mayor Bloomberg's job approval has leveled off, and there's little change in the head-to-head matchups: Bloomberg beats everyone except Fernando Ferrer." Republican Convention

The Republican National Convention will be good for New York City, 40 percent of voters say, as 25 percent say it will be bad for the city and 30 percent say it won't make a difference.

A terrorist attack during the GOP Convention is "very likely," 7 percent of voters say, as 32 percent say "somewhat likely;" 32 percent say "not very likely," and 23 percent say "not likely at all."

Only 12 percent of New Yorkers say they are getting out of town during the convention.

By a 75 - 21 percent margin, New York City voters say protestors should be allowed in Central Park during the Republican Convention.

"Whether it's a First Amendment issue or just a convenience question of putting the protestors in the park instead of in the street, New York City voters say more than 3 - 1 that protestors should keep on the grass," Carroll said.

"While they disagree with Police Commissioner Ray Kelly's line-in-the-sand position on demonstrations in Central Park, New Yorkers still approve 61 - 21 percent of their top cop."

From July 12 - 18, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,119 New York City registered voters, with a margin of error of +/- 2.9 percentage points.

The Quinnipiac University Poll, directed by Douglas Schwartz, Ph.D., conducts public opinion surveys in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Florida and nationwide as a public service and for research.
