February 28, 2003 - Hold The Duct Tape, New Yorkers Tell Quinnipiac University Poll; Voters Concerned About Terrorism. But Life Goes On
By a 64 - 35 percent margin, New York City voters are "personally very concerned about another terrorist attack" in the city, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today.

More women - 69 percent - are concerned than men - 57 percent, the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University poll finds.

The city is not adequately prepared to deal with another terrorist attack, New Yorker City voters say 56 - 35 percent. And the government's color-coded alert system is not helpful, voters say 60 - 35 percent.

After the latest increase in the terror alert level, 84 percent of New Yorkers say they went about their life as usual, while 16 percent say they made some changes.

"Take that duct tape and stick it, New Yorkers say. Most are concerned about terror, but they're not doing anything special to deal with it," said Maurice Carroll, director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute.

"Mayor Michael Bloomberg, with a lackluster 48 - 41 percent approval rating and negative scores for his handling of economic issues, gets a 60 - 27 percent approval for his handling of the threat of terrorism."

Mayor Bloomberg also gets a 56 - 32 percent approval for his handling of the city's recovery from the terrorist attacks.

Only 30 percent of New York City voters say they have stockpiled items in case of a new terror attack, while 69 percent have not.

From February 19 - 24, Quinnipiac University surveyed 889 New York City registered voters, with a margin of error of +/- 3.3 percent.

The Quinnipiac University Poll, directed by Douglas Schwartz, Ph.D., conducts public opinion surveys in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Pennsylvania and nationwide as a public service and for research.
