April 10, 2003 - New York City Men, Women Split Over Iraq War, Quinnipiac University Poll Finds; War Gives Bush A Boost In Approval
By a 50 - 44 percent margin, New York City residents support the war in Iraq, but women oppose the war 51 - 42 percent while men back the war 59 - 36 percent, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today.

A March 25 poll by the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University showed opposition to the war at 59 - 37 percent in the days before the war began, dropping to a 49 - 47 percent split by day five of the hostilities.

In this latest survey, black New Yorkers oppose the war 54 - 40 percent. Whites support the war 63 - 33 percent and Hispanics support it 49 - 43 percent.

Jewish New Yorkers support the war 59 - 35 percent.

"New York City men really are from Mars, and our women are from Venus," said Maurice Carroll, director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute.

"Different than the rest of the nation in their tepid support of the war, New Yorkers mirror the nation in their ethnic division: White respondents are more likely than blacks to be on the pro-war side.

"New Yorkers voted overwhelmingly against candidate Bush in 2000. They think a lot better of him as a wartime president."

Support for the war pushes President George W. Bush's overall approval to a 46 - 46 percent split, up from a negative 52 - 41 percent in New York City March 25.

New Yorkers approve 49 - 44 percent of the way President Bush is handling the war, up from a negative 49 - 45 percent March 25.

The war with Iraq is going "very well," 34 percent say, and 41 percent say it is going "fairly well;" 11 percent say it is going "not too well," and 6 percent say "not well at all."

From April 5 - 8, Quinnipiac University surveyed 726 New York City residents, with a margin of error of +/- 3.6 percent.

The Quinnipiac University Poll, directed by Douglas Schwartz, Ph.D., conducts public opinion surveys in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Pennsylvania and the nation as a public service and for research.
