April 4, 2001 - Hevesi Inches Up In Democratic Mayoral Race, Quinnipiac University Poll Finds; Green Leads In Primary Or Any Run-Off Matchup
Comptroller Alan Hevesi has edged up slightly in the New York City mayoral race, but Public Advocate Mark Green is still ahead in the Democratic primary and in any face- to-face primary runoff, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today.

In the Democratic primary, Green gets 28 percent, followed by 19 percent for Bronx Borough President Fernando Ferrer, 14 percent for Comptroller Hevesi and 13 percent for City Council Speaker Peter Vallone, with 22 percent undecided.

Hevesi trailed with 9 or 10 percent in previous Quinnipiac University polls.

If no candidate gets 40 percent of the primary vote, forcing a runoff, results are:
  • Green over Ferrer, 49 - 32 percent, with 16 percent undecided;
  • Green over Vallone, 52 - 28 percent, with 19 percent undecided;
  • Green over Hevesi, 51 - 27 percent, with 20 percent undecided;
  • Ferrer over Vallone, 43 - 35 percent, with 20 percent undecided;
  • Ferrer's 41 percent to Hevesi's 38 percent, a tie, with 18 percent undecided;
  • Hevesi over Vallone 39 - 34 percent, with 23 percent undecided.
From March 27 - April 2, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,066 New York City registered voters, with a margin of error of +/- 3 percent. The survey includes 680 registered Democrats with a margin of error of +/- 3.8 percent.

"The numbers churn in the four-way Democratic mayoral matchup. The horses are still running in the same order, with Green in the lead, but the race has gotten a little tighter and Hevesi finally has started to move," said Maurice Carroll, director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute.

"Political observers look at a close four-way race and see a runoff. Green leads any possible matchup, but Hevesi has gained some ground here also," Carroll said.

The next mayor should continue Mayor Rudolph Giuliani's crime-fighting policies, New York City voters say 57 - 37 percent. There is a big split between white voters, who want more of the Mayor's crime-fighting strategy 71 - 23 percent, and black voters, who want a new direction 61 - 32 percent.

Only 27 percent of voters want the next mayor to continue Mayor Giuliani's policies on education, while 62 percent want to change direction.

The next mayor should continue Giuliani's governing style, 42 percent of voters say, while 52 percent say he should not.

"Giuliani and the police: Thumbs up. Giuliani and the schools: Thumbs down. It's been the same throughout his tenure," Carroll said.

By a 42 - 35 percent margin, New York City voters have a favorable opinion of Mayor Rudolph Giuliani, with 22 percent mixed and 1 percent saying they don't know enough to form an opinion. Favorability ratings for possible mayoral candidates are:
