April 5, 2001 - Give Us More Power, But Not In My Back Yard, New Yorkers Tell Quinnipiac University Poll; Voters Back Stricter Ban On Restaurant Smoking
Fifty percent of New York City voters are "very concerned" that New York could face California-type energy problems in the months ahead, while 30 percent are "somewhat concerned," according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today.

Another 13 percent are "not very concerned" about energy problems while 7 percent are "not concerned at all," the independent Quinnipiac University poll finds.

By a 45 - 30 percent margin, all New York voters support the proposal to install 10 electric generators throughout the city by June, with 25 percent undecided.

Among the 54 percent of voters who have heard or read something about the proposal for 10 generators, support is 50 - 31 percent.

But New Yorkers disapprove 54 - 34 percent of any new generator being installed near where they live.

"Blackouts? Brownouts? New Yorkers look at the news from California and they're worried about potential energy problems here," said Maurice Carroll, director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute.

"But NIMBY is alive and well. New York City voters say build more generators, as long as you build them somewhere else."

Black voters oppose generators near their neighborhoods 64 - 24 percent, while white voters oppose generators near where they live 46 - 40 percent and Hispanic voters oppose them nearby 60 - 30 percent. Smoking in Restaurants

There should be a total ban on smoking in restaurants, according to 49 percent of New York City voters, including 29 percent of those who admit they smoked in the past week. Another 48 percent of voters say restaurants should have smoking areas and 3 percent say there should be no restrictions on smoking in restaurants.

Only 23 percent of voters say they smoked any cigarettes in the last week, while 77 say they did not smoke.

By a 63 - 34 percent margin, New York City voters support tougher restrictions which would allow smoking only in closed, ventilated smoking rooms in restaurants.

Second-hand smoke is "very harmful," according to 59 percent of New Yorkers, while 30 percent say it is "somewhat harmful;" 7 percent say it is "not too harmful," and 3 percent say it is "not at all harmful."

"Only a handful of New York voters would end restrictions on smoking in restaurants, while almost half of New Yorkers, including a lot of smokers, say ban smoking in restaurants completely," Carroll said.

"There's no question about second-hand smoke among New Yorkers. They say it's bad news."

From March 27 - April 2, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,066 New York City registered voters, with a margin of error of +/- 3 percent.

The Quinnipiac University Poll, directed by Douglas Schwartz, conducts public opinion surveys in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut as a public service and for research.
