July 25, 2001 - Bloomberg Narrows Gap, But Trails All Four Dems Quinnipiac University Poll Finds; Badillo Does Not Run As Well Against Dems
Republican mayoral candidate Michael Bloomberg has closed the gap against any of the four Democratic candidates, but still trails any Democrat, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today.

In a June 7 poll by the independent Quinnipiac University, Bloomberg trailed any of the four Democrats by margins of 2 -1 or more.

In this latest poll, possible general election matchups show:
  • City Council Speaker Peter Vallone over Bloomberg 53 - 28 percent, with 16 percent undecided, down from 61 - 18 percent June 7;
  • Public Advocate Mark Green over Bloomberg 54 - 28 percent, with 15 percent undecided, down from 62 - 20 percent;
  • City Comptroller Alan Hevesi over Bloomberg 51 - 29 percent, with 17 percent undecided, down from 58 - 21 percent;
  • Bronx Borough President Fernando Ferrer over Bloomberg 48 - 33 percent, with 17 percent undecided, down from 55 - 25 percent.

From July 17 - 23, Quinnipiac University surveyed 913 New York City registered voters, with a margin of error of +/- 3.2 percent. The survey includes 560 registered Democrats with a margin of error of +/- 4.1 percent.

"If he has enough time and spends enough money, Michael Bloomberg just might make this an interesting mayoral race," said Maurice Carroll, director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute.

"Bloomberg has covered a lot of ground in six weeks - spending a reported $8 million. There's three months and lots of millions still to go. Bloomberg still must get past Herman Badillo in the Republican Primary," Carroll added.

If Badillo wins the Republican nomination for mayor, possible matchups are:
  • Ferrer over Badillo 54 - 21 percent;
  • Hevesi over Badillo 59 - 20 percent;
  • Green over Badillo 62 - 20 percent;
  • Vallone over Badillo 61 - 19 percent.

Little has changed in the Democratic primary line-up, where Green leads with 30 percent, followed by Ferrer with 18 percent, Hevesi with 17 percent, and 16 percent for Vallone, with 18 percent undecided.

Mayor Rudolph Giuliani gets a 50 - 40 percent approval rating, unchanged for months. By a 39 - 36 percent margin, New York City voters have a favorable opinion of Mayor Giuliani, with 23 percent mixed and 2 percent saying they don't know enough to form an opinion.
Favorability ratings for mayoral candidates are:
              Favorable     Unfavorable     Mixed     No Opinion
Ferrer           31%            16%          21%          31%
Green            40             15           20           25
Hevesi           31             10           24           35
Vallone          31             10           26           32
Bloomberg        21             15           21           43
Herman Badillo   15             18           19           47

"Bloomberg is buying every available minute of TV time he can, and the other guys have been around forever. Yet only Mark Green breaks 40 percent on the favorability chart," Carroll said.

The Quinnipiac University Poll, directed by Douglas Schwartz, conducts public opinion surveys in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut as a public service and for research.
