October 9, 2001 - Green Edges Ferrer In Runoff, Quinnipiac University Poll Finds; Most New York City Voters Want Giuliani To Stay
Public Advocate Mark Green has a 46 - 41 percent lead over Bronx Borough President Fernando Ferrer among likely Democratic primary runoff voters, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today. Fourteen percent are undecided.

Among likely Democratic voters:
  • White voters support Green 67 - 20 percent;
  • Black voters support Ferrer 55 - 30 percent;
  • Hispanic voters support Ferrer 68 - 23 percent.
From October 1 - 8, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,745 New York City registered voters, with a margin of error of +/- 2.4 percent. The survey includes 532 likely Democratic primary runoff voters with a margin of error of +/- 4.3 percent.

"Just before the September 11 terror attack stopped politicking in its tracks, Quinnipiac University had polled Democratic voters and found Public Advocate Mark Green with a double-digit lead over Bronx Borough President Fernando Ferrer," said Maurice Carroll, director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute.

"Then the momentum shifted to Ferrer, but Green has held on to a slight edge."

"Some of the internal numbers - specifically the strong commitment by his supporters - look good for Ferrer," Carroll added.

"The continued strong support among the biggest of New York's minorities - non-Hispanic white voters - is a good sign for Green."

Among Ferrer voters, 61 percent say they strongly favor their candidate, while 7 percent say they back Ferrer mostly because they don't like Green.

Only 35 percent of Green voters strongly favor their candidate, while 23 percent say they back Green mainly because they don't like Ferrer.

By a 44 - 19 percent margin, likely voters have a favorable opinion of Ferrer, with 28 percent mixed and 6 percent saying they haven't heard enough to form an opinion.

Green gets a 43 - 13 percent favorability rating, with 33 percent mixed and 11 percent saying they haven't heard enough to form an opinion. Mayor Giuliani's Approval

Mayor Rudolph Giuliani enjoys a 79 - 16 percent approval rating among all New York City registered voters, his highest ever. Among this group:
  • 45 percent say Giuliani should step down when his term is over;
  • 31 percent say his term should be extended for 90 days;
  • 23 percent say he should be allowed to run for a third term.
"It's moot now, but when you add the 31 percent who want 90 more days and the 23 percent who want four more years, you get a majority of New Yorkers who want to see Mayor Giuliani stay around at least a little longer," Carroll said.

The Quinnipiac University Poll, directed by Douglas Schwartz, Ph.D., conducts public opinion surveys in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut as a public service and for research.
