March 16, 2000 - Yankees Rule in New York City, Quinnipiac College Poll Finds; Rocker Got Off Too Easy, Mets and Yanks Fans Say
Fifty-seven percent of New York City voters are New York Yankees fans and 46 percent are Mets fans, a number that exceeds 100 percent because some New Yorkers support both teams, according to a Quinnipiac College poll released today.

But if the Yankees face the Mets in a Subway Series this fall, 52 percent of New York voters would back the Bronx Bombers, while 35 percent would back the Amazins, with 13 percent undecided.

Being a Yankees fan crosses race and gender lines, with blacks and whites, men and women all in the 54 to 58 percent range. Among Hispanic voters, support for the Yankees jumps to 70 percent.

Mets fans include 55 percent of men, many of whom also back the Yankees, and 40 percent of women, with black, white and Hispanic fans in the 40 - 47 percent range.

"It's still a Yankee town. If the Bronx bombers pull a three-peat in the American League and the Mets win in the National league, New Yorkers would root in the Subway Series for the team in pinstripes," said Maurice Carroll, director of the Quinnipiac College Polling Institute.

While 38 percent of New Yorkers have been to a Yankees home game in the last two or three years, 43 percent plan to go this year.

And 30 percent of New Yorkers have been to a Mets home game in the last two or three years, with 31 percent planning to go this year.

Looking at Atlanta Braves pitcher John Rocker's 14-day suspension for comments about New Yorkers, 52 percent of voters say it is too short, while 3 percent say it is too long and 23 percent say it is "about right.' Another 14 percent say Rocker should not be suspended at all.

By a 66 - 27 percent margin, New Yorkers say Rocker should be required to undergo sensitivity training. Men back the required training 57 - 37 percent, while women back the training 73 - 20 percent.

And New York fans at Yankee Stadium and Shea Stadium are "well-behaved," according to 64 percent of New York City voters, while 19 percent say the are "not well- behaved."

"John Rocker? 89 percent of New Yorkers, including 86 percent of women, know something about the Atlanta pitcher with the bigoted mouth," Carroll said. "And in this most sensitive of cities, we feel Rocker should undergo sensitivity training," Carroll added.

From March 7 - 13, Quinnipiac College surveyed 817 New York City registered voters, with a margin of error of +/- 3.4 percent. The Quinnipiac College Poll, directed by Douglas Schwartz, conducts public opinion surveys in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut as a public service and for research.
