March 2, 2005 - NYC Voters Say Ferrer Cares More Than Mayor, Quinnipiac University Poll Finds; Mayor Slips In Approval, Matchups
New York City voters say 52 - 41 percent that Mayor Michael Bloomberg does not care about their needs and problems, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today. Voters say 62 - 16 percent that Fernando Ferrer, the leading Democratic challenger in this year's mayoral race, does care.

Ferrer now leads Mayor Bloomberg 47 - 39 percent among New York City voters, compared to a 43 - 43 percent tie in a January 19 poll by the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University.

Facing other Democratic challengers:
  • Bloomberg gets 40 percent to Council Speaker Gifford Miller's 38 percent, a statistical tie;
  • Bloomberg edges Manhattan Borough President C. Virginia Fields 41 - 38 percent:
  • The Mayor tops U.S. Rep. Anthony Weiner 41 - 36 percent.
"New Yorkers aren't convinced Mayor Bloomberg understands their problems. If the mayoral election comes down to caring, then Fernando Ferrer has a good head start," said Maurice Carroll, director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute.

"Ferrer has regained the lead he held for much of the last year, but this see-saw has a few more ups and downs before November. Council Speaker Gifford Miller has moved up also, and now ties the Mayor in a head-to-head matchup."

Looking at other Democrats, New York City voters say:
  • 34 - 19 percent that Miller "cares;"
  • 43 - 16 percent that Fields "cares;"
  • 32 - 15 percent that Weiner "cares."
Bloomberg's approval rating has slipped slightly from 50 - 37 percent January 19 to 48 - 40 percent today.

Primary Matchups

In a possible Republican primary, Bloomberg tops former City Council member Tom Ognibene 65 - 16 percent.

"Since New York City doesn't have many Republicans, the sample size is very small, but Mayor Bloomberg's lead over Tom Ognibene is very big," Carroll said.

Among Democrats, Ferrer leads with 40 percent, followed by Fields with 14 percent, and Miller and Weiner with 12 percent each. Another 20 percent are undecided. Ferrer is up from 31 percent among Democrats January 19. The other three Democrats have barely moved.

"In New York City, a candidate needs 40 percent to be declared a winner in a party primary. Ferrer's got it. Now he must keep it," Carroll said.

From February 22 - March 1, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,435 New York City registered voters, with a margin of error of +/- 2.6 percentage points. The survey includes 909 Democrats, with a margin of error of +/- 3.3 percentage points, and 210 Republicans, with a margin of error of +/- 6.8 percentage points.

The Quinnipiac University Poll, directed by Douglas Schwartz, Ph.D., conducts public opinion surveys in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Florida and nationwide as a public service and for research. For additional data -- www.quinnipiac.edu or call (203) 582-5201
