July 20, 2005 - London Bombings Have Not Changed Life In New York, Quinnipiac University Poll Finds; Voters Say 2 -1 Don't Give Up Civil Liberties For Safety
By an 88 - 11 percent margin, New York City voters say they have gone about their life as usual since the terrorist attacks in London, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today.

A total of 72 percent of voters are "very worried" or "somewhat worried" that an attack similar to the London bombings will occur in New York City, the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University poll finds. And voters say 50 - 41 percent that New York is not adequately prepared to deal with another terrorist attack. Despite those concerns:
  • 69 percent say they and their families are "very safe" or "somewhat safe" from such an attack;
  • Only 17 percent say they are less likely to ride the subway because of the London attack;
  • Only 10 percent say they are less likely to ride a New York City bus.
"Maybe we're blase. Maybe we're defiant. Maybe - even after 9/11 - we think it can't happen to us. But New Yorkers say, despite the terrorist attacks in London, they're sticking to their regular routines. They won't stay away from subways or buses," said Maurice Carroll, director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute.

"It's not that we think New York is immune. Most of us believe another terrorist attack is likely. And not many of us believe the City is really ready for another attack.

"But New Yorkers believe the show must go on."

New York City voters approve 62 - 23 percent of the way Mayor Michael Bloomberg is handling terrorism. These same voters disapprove 67 - 29 percent of the way President George W. Bush is handling terrorism.

By a 66 - 26 percent margin voters say the Police and Fire Departments can work together to deal with a major terrorist attack.

While the government should do what it can to prevent terrorism, New York City voters say 64 - 30 percent that those measures should not violate their civil liberties. Democrats take the civil liberties position 69 - 25 percent, as do independent voters, 66 - 27 percent. But Republican voters say 57 - 38 percent that anti-terrorism measures can violate civil liberties.

"'Tread on the terrorists, but don't tread on me,'" New Yorkers are telling Uncle Sam. Most of them want to be safe, but they don't want to lose their civil liberties," Carroll said.

From July 12 - 17, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,313 New York City registered voters, with a margin of error of +/- 2.7 percentage points.

The Quinnipiac University Poll, directed by Douglas Schwartz, Ph.D., conducts public opinion surveys in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Florida and nationwide as a public service and for research. For additional data -- www.quinnipiac.edu or call (203) 582-5201
