June 20, 2007 - Clinton Tops Giuliani, Bloomberg In New York State, Quinnipiac University Poll Finds; Thompson Tops McCain Among Republicans

Word format

In a hypothetical all-New York presidential race, Sen. Hillary Clinton wins with 43 percent of voters statewide, followed by former New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani with 29 percent and New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg with 16 percent, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today.

In a head-to-head matchup, Sen. Clinton tops Giuliani 52 - 37 percent, the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University poll finds. In other possible matchups:
  • Giuliani ties Illinois Sen. Barack Obama 43 - 43 percent;
  • Former Vice President Al Gore beats Giuliani 48 - 42 percent;
  • Clinton tops Arizona Sen. John McCain 56 - 32 percent;
  • Clinton beats former Tennessee Sen. Fred Thompson 56 - 29 percent;
  • Obama beats McCain 48 - 33 percent;
  • Gore tops McCain 50 - 36 percent;
  • Obama beats Thompson 51 - 27 percent;
  • Gore tops Thompson 54 - 30 percent.
Giuliani gets 46 percent of Republicans, followed by Thompson with 14 percent, up from 3 percent April 5. McCain has 8 percent, down from 13 percent April 5.

"Bloomberg-for-President? Not in New York State. At least, not yet. He runs a distant third to Sen. Hillary Clinton and mayor Rudolph Giuliani, two New Yorkers who are declared candidates," said Maurice Carroll, Director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute. "The neighbors would still sooner send their Senator to the White House than 'America's Mayor.' Giuliani loses to Clinton statewide and does even worse in the city that he led than in the state overall."

Clinton leads the Democratic primary pack with 44 percent, followed by Gore with 18 percent, Obama with 14 percent and Edwards with 6 percent.

"Big losers: Sen. Obama on the Democratic side; Sen. McCain on the Republican," Carroll said.

"Big winners: Vice President Gore (a non-candidate) for the Democrats; Thompson (a not-yet candidate) for the Republicans."

Clinton gets a 59 - 34 percent favorability rating and a 67 - 27 percent approval of the job she's doing as Senator. Favorability ratings for other contenders are:
  • 55 - 36 percent for Giuliani;
  • 40 - 33 percent for McCain;
  • 48 - 17 percent for Obama;
  • 40 - 30 percent for Edwards;
  • 57 - 32 percent for Gore;
  • For Romney, 60 percent haven't heard enough to form an opinion;
  • For Thompson, 57 percent haven't heard enough to form an opinion.
President Bush's Approval

New York State voters disapprove 71 - 24 percent of the job President George W. Bush is doing. Voters disapprove 76 - 19 percent of President Bush's handling of the war in Iraq and say 65 - 30 percent that going to war in Iraq was the wrong thing to do.

Congress should set a timetable to bring all U.S. troops home from Iraq, New York voters say 59 - 36 percent, with support from 32 percent of Republicans.

From June 12 - 17, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,369 New York State voters with a margin of error of +/- 2.7 percent. The survey includes 447 Republicans with a margin of error of +/- 4.6 percent, and 546 Democrats with a margin of error of +/- 4.2 percent.

The Quinnipiac University Poll, directed by Douglas Schwartz, Ph.D., conducts public opinion surveys in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Florida, Ohio and nationwide as a public service and for research. For more data -- http://www.quinnipiac.edu/x271.xml, or call (203) 582-5201.
